Who is your favourite Big Game Hunter

OK here's another hypothetical question.
If it were possible to jump into a time machine and go back in time to spend a days hunting and a nights drinking with one of the Great Hunters of AFRICAN Game who would you choose, and for what reasons.
Would it be Selous, Baker, Taylor, Bell, Hunter, Rushby or any of the many other Big Game Hunters, well known or not.

My choice would have to be Fletcher Jamieson.
From what I've read, Fletch loved the bush, double rifles, big game rifles, hunting, photography, and motorbikes.
I just happen to share those same interests.
Fletch was not there just for the money, he was there because he wanted to be there.
He loved the thrill of hunting and enjoyed the pleasure that comes from shooting, and owning quality rifles.
What a shame he never got the chance to write his own book.

I would like to hunt Africa with John A. Hunter but just the way he did it.
Now I prefer to hunt (And I did it ) with one of the last "White hunters" still alive (and working), Tony Sanchez Ariņo. With him you'll do a old time safari, today.

Sanchez would be okay, but I suspect he is very far out of my price range. Also, I was somewhat disappointed when I met him for the first time.

Of the old-time hunters, there are too many to choose from.

Possibly W. Robert Foran. He was well-read, educated, and hunted the Lado in its heyday.

Also, I was somewhat disappointed when I met him for the first time.

Do you think he thought the same of you at all?

There is one name up there on that first list that according to i think Capstick that sort of liked the boys if you know what i mean

Of the old timers, I'd would have loved to hunt with young Harry Selby. He hunted hard and really knew his stuff. For a modern era hunter, I was fortunate to have hunted with Watson "Yoshi" Yoshimoto, from Hawaii. He is an absolute gentleman, a real class act, and a superb hunter as well. It's too bad that his age and health prevents him from going out into the game fields any more.

I can't say the guy is my favorite hunter, but I would have liked to tag along with Elgin Gates.

Of course I would have liked to have been the backup gun for Burton or Speke on their exploration sojourns.

Will, probably you'll disappoint about hunting with almost PHs and I think that's why we hunt for pleasure and they hunt for work. Anyway is always amazing to hear a man who have been shot more than 1200 elephants with his clients, Tony is a nice campfire mate and, of course, he's not cheap.

Hey, you have a better idea of what type of person Sanchez is than I. I love his books, and his efforts to document some of the history of hunting the Lado, and his effort searching out and cleaning up the Sutherland's burial site monument.

In our brief meeting I just thought he was always hustling for a safari hunt.

Disregarding that, he has about as much experience as anyone on elephant and probably the most of anyone alive, and in great shape for his age. A man of many accomplishments (and money!).

Although he did not hunt Aferica,at least not that i know of,i would really like to hunt with the great Jim Corbett.He liked to hunt alone but just imagine if you had the chance of hunting with him,especially the maneaters,what a thrill it would be.Apart from being scared shitless it would be tremendously exciting and dangerous.It would be hunting at its best with the tracking,lying in wait of truly ferocious animals who would kill you given the slightest opportunity.

iqbal, yes, even though it was supposed to be on African hunting, I'm sure there would always be room to fit JC in.
A great hunter for sure and also a very good author.

I think Corbett did hunt a bit in Kenya. He moved there after Indian Independance. I doubt he was ever a PH though. Read Treetops, his last book. My friend, Bob Langenveld, grew up on the farm next to where Corbett lived. Unfortunately he never knew who he was when he lived there, only later. To Bob he was just ' the old man down the road'. His father was given autographed copies of all of Corbetts books however and Bob now has them.

Did any of you ever know some famous person as a child without knowing how famous he actually was?

Tes my first thought was col. James Corbett as well. I have all his books as well!!

My choice would be C. J. P. Ionedes who was honest to say in his book that he "worked his clients too hard".

I think I could like a person like that!!

You know, of all the great PHs, and market hunters down through history in Africa, I think the ones I'd rather hunt with are those still hunting today. Gordon Cundill, Penny De Vries (spl), Ronny Blackbeard, Ronnie Sparrow, Franz Coupe, Andrew Dawson, Russ Broom, Simon Eldredge, Johan Calitz, Martin Naude, and several more that are as good as the law allows today! If, however, restricted to the old days, then I have to agree with those who list Jameson, because he, like me, simply loved hunting, for the sake of hunting!

I have the feeling a lot of the old time African hunters may not have been all that personable. Especially those pre the client/white hunter era. They were loners that set off into the bush and many may have been "driven" men. Perhaps quite hard to deal with in real life. Someone like Bell I think would be like this. Corbett I think would have been quite shy and definitely a loner. He always expressed wanting to hunt man-eaters alone and often refused to become involved until everyone else was told to clear off. Some of these fellows I am certain would have been real rogues and not want witnesses.

Remember the "winners write the history" and these fellows survived and wrote their own stories, sometimes to criticism at the time.

Their books are still good reads though.

I would have liked to hunt with Harry Manners. He seems to be a good guy in his book and a competent elephant hunter. Sometimes quite humble. I also loved the way he liked good food and wine when in town and described some of the dinners with friends.

Bror Blixen, everyone seemed to like and the ladies love, so definitely the wife does NOT get to join us. Same with Bunny Allen as Mickey said.

Denys Finch-Hatton also seemed to be a very personable "white-hunter" as did his friend Berkeley Cole even though I don't think the later was a PH.

While not a PH, Karen Blixen would have been fantastic to have in camp for her sense of style and her spoken stories. I have been listening to audio tapes of hers recently, including one set of her actually telling the story "The King's Letter".

For the era but maybe not the man, Bell, during his ventures into the Karamojo and facing the "savages" single handed (along with askaris of course).

Imagine the guts to simply march into a village of blood thirsty killers as once you were in their village, the law of hospitality prevented them from killing you. At least you hoped they were "law-abiding".

Wouldn't it have ben fun to know John Boyce, King of the Wa-Kikuyu? One person I wuldn't wnt to hunt with was JH Patterson of Tsavo fame. Too much chance of being Lion Bait with that fellow.

In the movie Ghost and the Darkness you come across this hunter "Remington"who seems to be quite a character and i was pretty impressed by him.Was he for real?If so i would like to read about him,is there any book about him?Also did he actually die in Tsovo i.e. was he killed by the lions or was it just in the movie.

I was hoping that movie was going to the real thing, but no such luck. What an opportunity to make a great movie. Mumbo-jumbo sells better than real life, I guess.

Did someone mention this already?

I think Corbett's story(ies) would make a fantastic movie if done right.

And the maneater aspect would make it more acceptable to the plastic monkey population.

I have seen a video on Coebett. Sorry I don't rember the name or who the actors where but they were all british!!

For me, it would have to be HUNTER, not just for the area he hunted, but also for the sheer numbers and variety of game he shot.Maybe if I were with him all those years ago, I could have pursuaded him to buy the lease on the Ngorongoro crater from Capt.Hurst's brother.
