7x57R V.S 6.5x57R

Hello all.

Hope some can help me now.
I am looking at two old Ferlach rifles in these chambering`s.
I do plan to use them when hunting roe deer, rein deer and red stag here in Norway/Europe.

But, how is these two calibers, any pro and cons?
7mm is a bit larger, heavier bullet, maybe a bit deeper penetration....But, I am not sure.

The 6.5 will allow bullets with greater sectional density - which will penetrate better - which won't matter a bit.

Take the one that fits best - or looks best - or makes you feel the best...

6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Both will shoot 120 ish grain up to 160. Both will shoot flat enough and both will have enough thump to take any European game provided bullet is in the correct place. 6.5 might shoot a bit flatter, but probably makes not much difference in practice.

Exact same argument with 6.5x55 and 7x57, or 260 rem and 7mm-08.

Which of the two rifles feels nicer, fits you better, has better sights should be the determining factor. Ammo availability may be a consideration as well, but get a set of dies and 50 cases and you will be happy for a long time.

The 175gr 7mm and the 160gr 6.5mm will have nearly identical ballistic coefficients.
Flight path will be nearly identical, wind will be nearly identical.

I think Claydog said it best.
Get both.
Prepare your freezer.

The 7x57R handloaded will outperform the 6.5mm.

Depending on what the Ferlach guns are, ie if needing regulation loads etc.

I would go for the 7x57R before the 6.5x57R.

Both top class rounds.
I picked 7x57F for a spare set of barrels to be made up for my 375F double.

The only time I would pick 6,5 over 7x57R would be to use it with lighter bullet over clear longer distances on lighter game - Chamois in the Alps comes to my mind.

For anything else - give me 7 mm 170 grainers anytime.

Adam,

You may have mentioned this before, but what DR is this? Still under construction? I will do a quick search to see.

Also did you consider the 7x65R?

Good choices though. I doubt I could not miss going for a .30 Flanged (Super or H&H - whatever it is called) to go with a .375 Flanged.

I would go for the 6,5x57R, a lovely cartridge that is nothing to sneeze at. A 140 grain 6,5 bullet do the trick on all game in Europe. In a modern kiplauf with Jäger block action you can load the 6,5x57R to a very good performance.

The two rounds are extremely good ones…but they are at their best with heavy bullets.
I have made a lot of 6,5x57 rifles and I own a kipplauf chambered for the 6,5x57R.
A 140 grainer work better than a light bullet and I very like the RWS DK load that, on use, don't differ greatly from my beloved 6,5 Creedmoor.
The 6,5x57 (R) as a good reputation as an "Alpine" cartridge, I want to say a typical Chamois load. My son has built for his own use a 6,5x57 Mauser that now count more than an hundred heads of various mountain games and he think that it's on par with the .270 Winch.
The 7x57 (.275 Rigby) is a perfectly "balanced" cartridge and I use a Rigby for driven hunt. My choice goes to the RWS ID "Classic" (Brenneke TIG) 162 grains that is perfect for all our European games, from roe deer to red deer and wild boar.
I don't know very well and I haven't ever used the R version, but two goods friends of mine rely on it for all games (including mountain games) as they use light Merkel drillings chambered for that cartridge.
For me, and me alone (!), the 6,5 is more mountain oriented and the 7mm is more an all around cartridge…but that's only my opinion.
