Swiss made Martini action rifle (again)
      #236011 - 25/09/13 12:58 AM

This is for sale here in Finland. Someone has converted it to 7,62x53R but I´m quite sure that the original caliber has been 7,5x55 Swiss. Makers name seems to be J.Hartman. Can anybody tell more about the rifle or maker?

I can offer two J. Hartmanns in Switzerland:
Josef Hartmann, 26 rue de Berne, Geneve, mentioned 1970
Josias Hartmann, Lausanne, 1890-1960

Thanks, according to the rifles outlook I suppose the one from Lausanne.

I found this from net:

Quote:

"The only Hartmann gunsmith that I found in Lausanne is a Josias, he was by the defense department allowed to work on military guns from 1923 on.

And right you were. I received an email that the gunsmith's engraved name on the receiver is indeed "J.Hartmann" :-). He also was the Swiss Olympic bronze medallist in Paris 1924, smallbore 50 metres prone. He won several world champion titles in 1925, 1927 and 1929.
In 1974, a gunshop under his name still operated (23, rue de Berne, city not indicated).

Addition no. 1 from the website of the Raetisches Museum:
"Josias Hartmann aus Says, Schützenweltmeister, 1893-1982"

Quote:

rue de Berne 23 is in Geneva, the other city where he was located, it's a Turkish carpet store now.
There was actually another Josias Hartmann's and that other was from Bern city and estimated to be in business between 1890 and 1936, the last developed a patented (9. October 1927) match pistol.

And then this.

Quote:

rifle made by (or for) the dealer Josiah Hartmann (1893-1982) in Lausanne

J. Hartmann was a gunsmith who has been approved by the Military Department to work on regulatory rifles from 1923

I think he knew the shot ==> Oympic bronze medal in the 50 meter rifle in Paris in 1924 and world champion in 1925, 1927 and 1929
