Bespoke 250-3000 Mauser '98
      #231618 - 25/06/13 12:33 PM

I recently had Tony Small rebuild my 250 Savage varmint rifle into a more 'classic' styled stalking rifle.

All three of my custom rifles by Tony have the same stock dimensions and shape. Only the forends and weight for each rifle differs. I contributed many parts and ideas and Tony turned it into a rifle I have wanted for many years. This should have been my first custom rifle, however dreams and trips to Africa and NZ put those plans and finances on hold.

Pictures and captions tell a story quicker than typing it out.

Barrel was a special order .25 cal  Lothar Walther 1 in 10" profiled blank. They don't make a .257" so it cost a bit more than their pre-chambered barrels. A 250-3000 reamer proved to have a short throat (for 87 grainers) so delivery was delayed while Tony ordered a throat reamer. It now has a +0.035" longer throat for 100 and 120 grain projectiles. Tony suggested a lighter profile and I should have listened to him. This is quite heavy and with mild loads won't warm up till 9-12 rounds have gone down the barrel.

Tonys stock cradle. Wood came from a random block of Queensland Maple. I wanted a little bit of Australia in this rifle and Qld Maple appears in a lot of WWII SMLE .303's. Not a wood like walnut, but with a battle proven pedigree.

Raw stock with pre-fit grip cap. Packmayr recoil pad.

First coat of oil. Not much detail

Trigger guard recontoured with older floorplate (replaced with a new one)

Butter knife bolt handle in the white.

Ten coats of hand rubbed oil and one of stock wax.

Recknagel front sling wivel, custom contoured

Dakota Arms rear sling swivel inletted into stock. No engraving on this rifle. I kept in plain, black and Maple.

The Underbelly. Trigger is a Sako. Balance is just behind the front action screw.

Not shown are the action screws which were made from scratch, indexed and the rear screw head contoured to fit the curve in the metalwork. The rifle is finished in Tony's magnificent rust blue.
I replaced the Swaro shown in the early photo and fitted my trusty and world travelled Zeiss 2.5-10x42 T* Victory scope. The magazine well is blocked off at the rear and a shorter floor plate and spring fitted.

First group post sight in, a load of 33 grains of 2208 under 100 grain Sierra SptBt's went 0.90". It's a shooter.

BTW, Tony is booked out for 12 months.

Thanks John.

The ol' .250 Savage still have a magic. Intestingly the Mauser Volke in oberndorf adapted only a few american cartridges...actually only the 30-06 also.
Nice rifle..especially the eyes for the slinghook. Perhaps it will bring a springbok in the bakkie...haha

Nice vintage calibre.

I see the last line, damn!

PS tried to fix the photos but couldn't work out what is wrong with the first one, and the links to the others are "not" working.

edited to add in my "not".

Jens,

It currently has a Sako trigger set at 2.5lb pull. Despite Tony doing some work on it, a Timney will replace it at some stage.

The left side mounted low swing safety is also Recknagel. I like them there so I can push them down/off with my thumb without moving my hand. With a Timney trigger all three rifles will be as similar as possible.

.250-3000, 7x57 and 9.3x62

A second R.Famage Mauser '98 action sits in the safe waiting for a .318 NE barrel one day. That will round out the battery.

I see this as my large feral, goat, pig, springbok and Roe rifle. It should also handle fallow and Impala size game with correct shot placement.

Oopse, that was supposed to be "links are not working". For me at any rate.

Can you message me a link to one of the sites where it is working, so I can view the photos and links?

I will get it working one way or another.

Why, I always prefer SAKO trigger over TIMNEY. They are all steel made and very easy to adjust.

If I slam the bolt home it 'trips' and the firing pin is released. Just like pulling the trigger as you close the bolt (on an empty chamber). Tony has come across this before.

The trigger is an inherited issue from a previous life. Maybe it is the Sako to Mauser conversion ?

SAKO Mauser/High Power and L61R has the same trigger with safety and they used that same trigger in L461 and L579 too. The minimum safe trigger pull weight with them is 1,5 kg (=3,3 lbs).

Well I increased the weight of pull and all is good. The trigger is not too heavy and the bolt cocks reliably. Again thx Igorrock.

Nice to hear, I have used this type of trigger in many Mauser rifles and has always been satisfied with it. The only little tricky thing is requisite commercial cocking piece without notch.

Nice work , enjoy your photos.

Igor, I have two military 98 sporters, a '36 Mex and a '35 Peruvian that have the wonderful Sako trigger with the side sliding safety and they both have the military cp with the cut out arch and work perfectly with no gunsmith modifications except for a slit cut in the bottom of the action for the bolt to lock. They are well over 30yrs old and would not replace the Sako with a Timney.

OK, for some reason all those SAKO Mausers with adjustable trigger which I have seen has cocking piece without cut. I have to test it again myself.
