Remington Pump Actioned Rifles
      #216067 - 04/09/12 03:38 PM

I have an old, but pristine Remington 760 in 30:06. How do I support the rather spongy forend of this rifle whilst shooting off a bench rest? The trigger has been done, a decelerator recoil pad installed. It has been re-crowned, and swivels installed. With the honed action, it has to be one of the slickest pumps around.

I wanted a rifle that was basic and not too fancy. I already have beautiful rifles, and synthetic stocked, post modern rifles. I just wanted a mutt of a rifle. It is my third rifle chambered in 30:06.

Any tips for shooting this thing off the bench would be dearly appreciated. As it is now, I can shoot this thing far more accurately in a sitting position than I can off a bench rest. The spongy forend is entirely to blame. It does shoot, but I would love to see what it can really do.

Thank you

albertan

Maybe yours rifle is designed just for off hand shooting as much as those bench rest rifles for shooting over the rest...?

I have one of these in 30.06, given to me years ago by my father in law, and lots of Elk and Deer have succumbed to it.

The front end on mine is certainly kind of loose and rattles around a bit, but I don't ever remember having trouble sighting it in. Just sandbag the forepeice as best you can and see what happens.

I dont like the action, which is rough at best, and I always seem to have trouble getting the box magazine(s) to set just right, but the rifle shoots well otherwise.

A good slathering of Break Free CLP, will smooth out any action. It will also ensure plunger type ejectors work as they should. With the assistance of a good tooth brush and some elbow grease, it will even remove brass from bolt faces. My magazine slips in and out a lot easier than it did when I purchased this 760.

It doesn't stiffen a spongy forend.

Just do your best and take patient shots. I used to use an old pillow as a "sand bag" for decades, and just need to take careful shots from a "bench".

I am going to try the soft, pillow approach. These pumps want to spring open during the firing process if the forend is resting on a sand bag and not held back. This has been known to break of action lugs.
