Period Scope Options for a 1960 Win Model 88
      #163807 - 10/07/10 11:14 PM

Anyone have any ideas on a good choice of period correct scope for a 1959-1960 Winchester 88 in 243?

I recently purchased one at a really good price and it turns out its in very good original condition (but missing its magazine). The plan was to off load it at a profit, but I think I really like it and I'll keep it. I haven't had much experience with lever guns but the others I've used were not great. This on the other hand is impressive on many fronts.

So I need to pick up a decent scope that wont look out of place. As I'll mainly be using it on goats and the occasional pig, I was thinking of a 2-7x scope. I had a quick look and weavers, redfields, burris etc all have such a model that goes back a bit, but which one is best optically speaking. At the end of the day, they are old scopes so I dont want to end up with a scope I cant use.

I'd put on a reconditioned Weaver K-4.
They were very rugged and held zero perfectly.

I really like the weaver K-4's as well and I have one on a BRNO model 2 rimfire as the blues scope tubed body suits the rifle and it has behaved perfectly for many years know.

I was hoping to have a bit more magnification, so that why I was leaning towards a compact variable.

How does the 2-7 weaver compare to the k4?

I have a model 88 that was my grandfathers. The stock had been modified before he got it. I have deer hunted with it and really like the way it handles. Mine is in .308, but like everything else, I can't leave well enough alone and will be rebarreling it to .358 Win. Already have the barrel, just not the time. Good luck with yours.

I agree with Steve - a straight 2 1/2 or 4X Weaver should be on that rifle.
