Gaur ,Seladang
      #60170 - 21/07/06 08:31 AM

I have been readin a bit to much about the Gaur and the Seladang, the little midget bull that only can reach 7-8 feet shoulderheight and who only can weigh about 3000 pounds. a very little bull heis, infact so small that that if i got one i want know where to put the trophy.

On a wall, yes , but first i have to build a wall that is big enough for him ,then i can mount him on that wall, but first ill have to build a house inwhich that wall will be a part of.

Well what i mean is where can they be hunted, how much is the trophy fee, is it doable for me to hunt or must i marry Donald Trumps daughter first to get money for the hunt??

Hi Zaitsev. As far as I know, Gaur cannot be legally hunted nowadays anywhere where this animal is original. I have a friend, althou, that took one not long ago during a hunting trip to Vietnam, but he suspects that he shot it out of this country. I can even send you a photo.
I think, anyway, that it would be easier to get married with Trumps´s daughter (does he have any??, would you mind to share her??)

Well, I guess that squid will be the lesser trouble.

Even if you marry her you may still not get to hunt the Gaur. But do marry her for the heck of it.

Iqbal, it is a pleasure to speak with someone from Pakistan again. I have to say that some of the loveliest hunting moments of my life happened in your Country.

Ahhhh ,isnt the Internet fantastic in bringing hunting buddys together,

Well i have seen a couple of Trump`s "the apprentice" shows and here is a couple of lines from his "The Son in Law"

"Are you a golddigger??"

"Do you want to be the mayor of New York?"

"Have you ever dreamt about checking your account and there is 3 billion dollar there?"

The closest thing to hunting Gaur/Seladang today is probably a banteng hunt in Northern Australia in the Cobourg Peninsula where they were released during colonial days. They are a wild herd in a National Park and on Aboriginal land and a hunting quota exists for them with a number of safari operators being able to organise hunts for them. I would like to hunt them oneday.

Banteng are smaller than a Gaur.

One of my main interests when visiting a couple national parks in India earlier this year was to photograph wild gaur which if they could be hunted would make an impressive trophy. I did get photographs in good light and some poor video but these gaur where in heavy 'jungle'. These photos are on the NitroExpress.com forums. Do a search for them. I did see two grand bulls, one of which immediately moved into thick cover and the last was feeding fully in the open and easily observed with the naked eye but the sun still hadn't risen so photography was impossible. A future goal to still get good wild gaur photos.

Hunting gaur now is unfortunately only in the historical hunting books, unless there are some in a game park somewhere else in the world outside of their home ranges.

They are also a favourite delicacy of the resident tigers in the same parks which also keeps numbers down.

And, what about that wild bull that you have in N. Zeland, boss?
I´ve heard about self guiding hunts for this brave animal, than can rise up to the most exciting dangerous hunts to be made.
Can you tell us more?

I´ m not quite sure, Iqbal, but I´d say that it was around 1990 or so. The hunt was organised by the old and good Rohil Nana (R.I.P.).
I hunted in Baluchistan, in Dureji more exactly for the Sind ibex and the Baluchi Urial ; afterwards spent some time having fun with boars close to Lahore, and the last part of the trip happened in the Salt Range of the Punjab for that Urial.

The "base camp" In the Punjab was in the palace of the Nwabzada Malik Azam Khan, just by the Jhelum River.
There I hunted acompanied with 6 soldiers (I´m sure you know why) and was the luckiest man to bag the unofficial SCI world record.

Many, many good feelings when I rearly speak about that hunt. I ´ll never forget Pakistan.

Best regards

Preacher,of course I knew Rohail Rana(great guy). You probably hunted in Doreji with Saleh Bhotani,he is the only one who has the urial.I have hunted wild boar and phara and nilgai near Lahore across the BRB canal with the rangers and in Jhelum with the Rajas.Although I don't know Azam Khan I have heard of him.Hunting in Pakistan truly is a tremendous experience and im glad you liked it.
Good wishes and regards.

NitroX,

Gaur were plentiful in India through the 1980s but it was a foot and mouth disease epidemic that almost wiped them out in 1984 or 85, I don't exactly remember when. Yes, India's wildlife is a pale shadow of what it was in the past.

Cheers!

Do you have any photos or stories of your hunts in Pakistan?

I do. Just allow me a couple of days or three.
In the mean time, please tell me about hunting Scrub Bull in N. Zealand.

Rgds.

Preacher

I'm afraid I have not hunted scrub bull in NZ, but would be keen to hear about it myself if anyone else has. It would be interesting to hear even which areas of Kiwiland have or had scrub bulls.

I have hunted scrub bulls in the NT ie Northern Territory of Australia. Alan Moon of this forum also runs scrub bull and boar hunts in Far North Queensland.

It was an Australian, Pete Prentice (from Prentice Bros. firearms sales), who told me about that beast and the exciting way it could be hunted in N.Z.
I think it is of a maximum importance the place where the hunt takes place. He told me about unexploded areas with deep riverine forests, huge cliffs and things like that, along with being self-guided hunts, that would make this a real adventure. I don´t know if the Northern Territory of Australia fits with these parameters too.

Found this old thread.

Heard it from PP, well then ...

Since this time I have hunted Banteng in the Cobourg Peninsula. With Matt Graham, sadly now RIP. A very enjoyable hunt and quite different from the water buffalo I have hunted.
