As usual, they get into a gallop when they sight or smell a hunter.

I find it a real thrill to be honked by unseen deer in cover and have them burst out in front of you.

Sharp shooting experience comes to the fore when presented with targets as below.

Thanks Staffan..its blokes like you that appreciate photos that I post them for.

Days gone i would have rolled either of those deer..its so much more satisfying trying to shoot them with the camera.

I walked a bit last night till dark in very high feed and all I saw was a glimpse of a hind getting uit of cover..a two second glimpse.

Having never shot, or even seen a wild deer, i'd gladly "roll" one of those 2.

Don't worry, Gryphon. Whilst few people may comment, lots enjoy your pictures

JG, You KNOW I always appreciate your photos. Had a look at the photos yesterday or this morning ... firefox browser dumped on me and froze so I had to close down all the windows.

I love seeing the sambar photos. And shooting one on the run would be difficult for me.

They appear to run like Whitetails - larger, of course - long, jumping bounds. Tough shot if you can't follow for a couple or more bounds to get the rhythm.

Love the pictures, Gryphon

Daryl, if spooked particularly at close range they bolt like a race horse or a Grey Hound, regardless of how thick or how steep it is. I have found tracks coming up out of rivers that are so steep that it is impossible for me to climb without a rope or heaps of small trees to hang on to and yet they seem to be able to do it with ease, and I am quite fit. They can cover a huge amount of ground very quickly without ever tripping up even though our bush is quite thick in most places.
They are amazing animals. Very exciting to hunt.

Ash,you never know cob..you may one day get a Guernsey to hunt down south if I decided to have a run up your way to chase a few of your local species.

Waidmansheil you are on the money with the difficulty factor in some of the sambar areas. In fringe country near people they can be as secretive as leopards..many people don't even know that sambar are visiting their house blocks at 2am etc.
They are a grand species for those that hunt them ethically without the aid of spotlights.

tks guys - yes - exciting to hunt and most challenging. That, is hunting.

To get all those beautiful pictures, Gryphon, quite amazing- I now can see the thrill of that hunt.

In his 1961 book written in India in the 1850's, Lt. James Forsyth wrote of shooting a Sambar stag at 250 yards with a 14 bore caplock double. With a mere 3 drams of powder, the ball (probably 15 bore in size and 440gr.) passed both shoulders.

No no, i wasn't meaning you, sir. Just sayin' a lot of things don't get many replies that should. I'm guilty of it too. I've had a few people say they dont bother posting photos because they dont get enough responses to warrant the effort etc. It's one of the issues with a small membership of regulars.
