New Zealand - Red Deer in the Rainforest
      #150416 - 12/01/10 09:41 PM

Not much about New Zealand on this admireable forum, so I thought I would rectify that in a small way - (I recognise a couple of kiwi members on here too...)
A few photo's I have uploaded to the net - no big trophies here just some shots of hunting NZ....

Young red stag roared in to about 10 metres, taken with a Brno ZG47 in 7x57mm

.30/30 Winchester 94 made in 1952, still going hard...

Typical hunting country in the South island - you can go up the mountain or stay at the bottom. Not much in the middle...

Caught in the open....my old Sako in 25/06. Wonderful deer rifle, but a tad heavy - or so I thought. One I always regretted selling.

Fallow deer as well...some pretty good fallow hunting - if you can get them in open. Fallow deer in the bush can be a trial with all the prancing from side to side....

I'd already gutted him before I thought of a photo...

When you climb up out of the bush over the treeline, this is what the tops look like.

You live in Gods country, I have been there a couple of times now and love it. If I could make a dollar there I would be living there today. Hunting there is so unlike here, I was down the Wairurahiri River in September. And I have not seen anything like it anywhere, not too keen on the sandflies though.

WELCOME and absolutely stunning pic's.

Really, these are so good you shouldn't post them on an open forum...you'll be swamped with immigrants!

Reminds me of pre-wolf days here a bit.

How about a comment or two on the lowered comb on the Lee. I have done that on several Husqvarnas. Curious as to why you also did it on that gun.

Really THANKS for posting!

Thanks guys, I will have to upload some more photos to photobucket on my old computer...

regarding the Lee enfield stock - the top part of the buttstock is actually issue, but it may look lowered because of what has been done to the bottom to make it look more 'sportered'. The Lee stocks are perfectly set up heightwise for open sights - as you would expect, but too lowfor a scope.
I enjoy shooting over open sights, being a simple man.

Yes, the sandflies in the south island can be a bit of a trial, although they are better than mosquito's...they are one of the reasons I am sure the Japanese havnt opened holiday resorts on the side of some of these rivers - so they are important, and we have to thank them otherwise CLub Med would be mucking with my hunting....

What are "pre-wolf days"?

Days before the Federal Government dumped wolves on us and we had abundant elk.

Manage your own game, and don't let ANYONE convince you that the introduction of large predators beings balance to nature!

Please keep posting. You live in a Wonderland, to be sure!

Great images Carlsen!

Dave Dobbin almost got the song title right, it should have been,

NZ, it's "A Slice of Hunting (and fishing and scenic) Heaven"!

Carlsen, is Port Charmers the port for Dunedin?

Yes, it is.
Last stop for Captain Scott as well...his dog traces are in a building down the hill from me. Also found out recently that WDM Bell passed through on a ship before he went to Africa. Since then it's been pretty quiet.

Thanks Carlsen,

Lovely part of the country (when the weather is fine!!!).

I don't know if you know "Von Gruff", but he lives further inland in Otago?

Hey 9.3X57,

Great idea about the immigrants, he can sure have some of ours, we have boatloads and will not miss a few.....

CarlsenHighway, welcome, great pic's and looks like you have had some good hunts. I was there a few years back but just to do the tourist thing unfortunately no hunting.

Cheers and good luck,

Jeff Gray
