Who's up for a buffalo hunt in August?
      #13746 - 20/04/04 10:43 PM

I'm going to be hunting water buffalo in North Eastern Arnhemland in the beginning of August, 2nd August to 6th August, five full days hunting with pickup in Gove on the 1st and return the 7th in a top area and from a first class camp.

Hunting water buffalo, pigs, maybe some waterfowl (ducks and magpie geese) plus fishing.

It is on a 4x2 basis and I understand there is still a place or two left available. I'm helping the outfitter to fill the spot or two.

Who is interested in coming for a hunt?

I'm planning to give 'Zabardast' the .450 Jeffrey a serious work out on this hunt.

If interested email me Nitro@NitroExpress.com or PM me.

I will be in Gove the 1st of August, hunting 2 August to 6 August and catching a flight back to Darwin 7 August. That is the period when Matt is doing this 4x2 hunt.

I will be in the NT for probably a week each side of this period as well. I hope to do some hunting elsewhere as well, plus do a week or so of tourist sightseeing in Kakadu and elsewhere in the Top End.

Probably will end up driving up and back unless the Ghan has vehicle spots and a flight can be organised at the last moment (the bastards won't guarantee a vehicle spot unless you book a train ticket as well). I'd rather drive for 4 days than sit on a train for 3 days! My wife will fly up at least one way after the hunt above. Anyone won't to come for a 3000 km drive with me?! It will be an adventure .

I will be checking the NT gov't web sites for the waterfowl season. I haven't shot magpie geese before and if it is on, will definitely bring a shottie.

The waterfowl season started August 23 last year so maybe it might be later in the month.

And 17 August the previous year (2002).

So I might just have to fill in time on those pesky barramundi.

Waterfowl season set to get underway

Office of the Chief Minister

The 2003 Northern Territory Waterfowl hunting season is set to begin this month, running from 23 August to 14 December 2003.

The Minister for Parks and Wildlife, Kon Vatskalis, announcing this year’s season today, following consultation with local hunters.

"This year’s season will run four months, with the duration and timing based on careful consideration by the Parks and Wildlife Service and wildlife management officers," Mr Vatskalis said.

"Research suggests recreational hunting has a very minor impact on bird numbers compared with other sources of mortality.

"Regardless, research and monitoring of waterfowl populations will continue and controls will be implemented if deemed necessary."

Mr Vatskalis reminded hunters a ban on lead shot applies to all Parks and Wildlife Hunting Reserves, including Shoal Bay Coastal Reserve, Howard Springs Hunting Reserve, Lambells Lagoon and Harrison Dam Hunting Reserve.

"This is part of a national strategy to combat the problem of lead shot poisoning of waterfowl, which exists in many wetland areas across the country."

The Minister said waterfowl permits will be available prior to the opening of this year’s season in three weeks, with all hunters required to obtain a permit for hunting on reserves, crown land and private property.

"Rangers will be running regular checks to enforce the laws and ensure hunters are carrying out appropriate practices," Mr Vatskalis said.

RLI

I believe you sent me an email earlier. I had trouble replying but will try a different PC and send you a reply email.

Personally I am looking at the Jeffrey .450, plus my Whitworth .375. If waterfowl are on the agenda a s/s shottie or a .308 BLR. Need to find out what weights restrictions there will be on the flight Darwin to Gove.

Among your armoury there is some tough decisions to be sure.

I've been playing around with some maps.

First a map of Australia. Arnhemland is right at the Top of Australia, centrally placed and at the Eastern Top corner of the Northern Territory.

A closer-up view of the Eastern map of Arnhemland. Gove Peninsula is the very North-Eastern tip. A wild place, not many roads there.

Had I not drawn a moose tag for Canada this year I would have done this hunt. I hope someone takes you up on it, John. I bet one hell of a good time is in order!

It's a good deal in my opinion and a good group of folks to hunt with! Wish you were doing it next year!

Ann

I hope to go up North again next year. Only thing that might prevent it would be a cape buffalo somewhere .

If Matt can organise a concession a good idea for 2005.

Plus I am guessing there may still be a place or two left in the first week of August.

Unfortunately the hip pocket can't handle a trip this year or I would have been there. I am working on being there in 2005 and a group hunt would be a great way to do it. BS sessions with a group of newly met friends are one of the things I really like about guided hunts.

Well two places went un-used.

We saw 100 point bulls each day too.

Hunted the same concession, Gan Gan, as where Boddington recently hunted and not yet published. I was the first Aussie to hunt there as a client in about twenty years too.

Sorry to rub it in.
