Wishlist Thar and Chamois Rifle
      #279111 - 11/03/16 11:38 AM

I am seeking the views of people who have spent a lot of time hunting in mountains and have tailored their rifle purchase/build to suit.

Having done some thar and chamois hunting a mate and I have been discussing the ultimate "best value" rifle for the purpose.

So what is it that you habitual mountain hunters use?

What factory rifles and scope combinations have passed the test of time on the hill ???

What cartridge is your favourite mountain rifle chambered for?

What are your good and bad experiences with rifles for this purpose?

Mine was a Rem 700 in .270 with a Kahles 2.5-10X50 scope. That combination took the brunt of quite a few falls and never missed a beat or required rezeroing. The barrel on that 270 was eventually shot out. I still use the same calibre and scope but the rifle is now a Steyr Pro Hunter. I now use 140grain bullets instead of the 130grn pills.

If you want to save weight then look at the Tikka T3 lite in 308 or 7-08. This combination sees a lot of use in NZ.

If I was getting a rifle just for Thar and Chamois I would look at the Browning X-Bolt in 270, 280, 7X57, 7X64, 7-08, 308. Or a Steyr Scout in 7-8 or 308. You don't need magnums but a 270, 7mm, 300 in SAUM or WSM will work and can be had in light rifles.

Scopes, well I would go Kahles, Zeiss, Swaro, S&B, Nightforce. Not the cheaper options from these companies but at least the mid to upper range. Reasons. I find their clarity to be better than the Leopold's etc. I also find the mid range to be as durable and the upper price range to be more durable then Leopolds etc.

2.5-10X50 well the 50m objective lens is really to big, I think. 42/44 mm would be the largest objective lens IMHO.

Why do I have the 50mm lens. First Kahles I bought and used, sold on it. Check weld on the Rem 700 was never as solid as I like but with the Pro Hunter stock...well it is like the two were made for each other, yet strangely a small scope on it with lower rings does not seem uncomfortable or hard to use.

Best value is a Tikka T3 in 7mm rem mag. Get a scope with a high end around 14x and you will be good to go. With a bit of handloading you should have a rifle capable of a 600yd shot.

My personal mountain rifle is a Remington Model 7 in 7SAUM. I have gone all out to make it really light to carry. I made a carbon fibre stock for it, fluted the barrel and bolt, replaced the factory firing pin and shroud with a light weight one and had a vais-type muzzle brake made for it. I used Talley one piece rings and have a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 scope on it. All up weight is 6.75lb. Ive deer out to 594yds with it.

here is a video of the trip where I shot the deer at 594yds.

G'Day Fella's,

Twobobbwana, I'm in the process of assembling my own lightweight rifle.
It is very much a "Carbon" copy (pardon the pun), of Stug's great lookin rifle!

Basically, its a stainless Rem Model 7, with a Wyatt extended magazine box fitted (for ammo, with an OAL of 3.000"). A 24" Hardy Carbon wrapped barrel (in 6.5 Rem Mag, with a 1 in 8" twist) and one of Stug's or a Senator Carbon fiber stock.

This will be mate for my Sambar rifle, a Rem Mod 673 (7), in .350 Rem Mag.

Stug, have a look at your PM on this forum mate, where I inquire about a couple of your CF stocks!

Another great off the shelf option, would have to be a Kimber 84L Montana or Mountain Assent, in .280AI!

Hope that helps

Avagreatweekendeh!

Stug that rifle is a nice looking and very functional set up. My 300SAUM is in a Wilddog stock and a 700 action. I think you have the better option for weight in the Model 7.
