Westley Richards Deeley Edge 320 Rook Rifle
      #167789 - 15/09/10 02:37 PM

This is a Westley Richards Deeley & Edge patent rook rifle.
I have yet to work up a load for this one - if I can find some 32Colt ammo that would be a start (hint, hint)
I really like this rifle - it is a bit larger than the usual break action rooks which are commonly encountered and is a good example of the first falling block action produced by Westley Richards.
I like the looks of the long action which is common on the rook sized rifles. Many of the larger bored rifles of this patent had the action sides shaved off at the rear edge so the side walls were shorter front to back but functionally the same.
Also, this is the first British action to have an automatic safety that I am aware of.

Neat rifle. I forgot to say so before but I was reminded by your thread on the 320 Rook over in the reloading section. The Greenwood book has a good section on cartridges and reloading, if you don't have it it's a nice reference to read about the various designs and speculation of who actually made the actions.

This summer I picked up an H&H Royal that I think was in 300 Rook, still havn't figured out how to take the forend off to confirm, but was relined to 22 Hornet. The relining was well done and the rifle is very accurate, it also saves me trying to make 300 ammo.

Sharpsnitro, the for end of your Holland simply snaps on and off. I know it feels like you must use quite bit of force to get it off but that is how my Holland is too. Pull it off grasping just behind the for end tip.
Akmike, the correct case is between the 32 short and 32 Colt long.
The Colt longs chamber just fine in my gun - I managed to scrounge up a few shells. Next will be a cast to see if I can simply use the standard longs.

Thanks. I figured it was something simple. These rifles are so delicate feeling that you really don't want to force things if you don't know what you are doing.

The proof marks under the fore end indicate it was a 300 Rook made in the early 1900's. The re-lining was done in England in 1966 according to the new Birmingham proofs.

I'll have to be a tease for now. Here are a couple of pictures of it from a thread I made trying to identify the scope mounts that were put on it.

I'll see what I can do about taking a few more pictures this weekend.
