7x57R ammo hot or not??

Just fired my 1920's Bockbuchesflinte rifle barrel today for the first time, The BBF's caliber is 7x57R. I used Hornady 162 grain,balistic tip ammo and experienced some difficulty opening the action at times,not ALOT but noticably more force needed on the top lever than when shooting the shot barrel(16 ga.) do you guys know if these Hornady rounds are hotter than the Prvi Partisan or Sellier and Bellot? Any experience or info on these different makers 7x57R would be much appreciated! I chose this maker becouse there bullet wieght was more than the other two's at 139gr. and my BBF is marked on the chamber specifying 12 grams which is in the high 180's or 190 gr.,so I was trying to get closer to the wieght the sights were set up for. I just dont know about powder charge on these rounds! Dont want to shoot her loose! How do these rounds charge compare with how they loaded rounds pre war?? THANKS for any and all info! Kevin.

I have had several Baikal combination guns that showed cratered and flattened primers with S&B. I pulled the bullets, reduced the load by a couple grains, and the problem was solved in my guns. I never used Hornady so I'm not sure about it.

I have found the S&B and Privi loads are hotter than Norma. Have not tried Hornady loads either.

I thought the Norma with the 156g Oryx at 2650fps was one of the hottest around?

From what I can gather, most of the German ammo seems to be loaded at 780ms (~2550fps) in 160g or 750ms (~2460fps) with the 173g. I've got some 175g Privi Partisan loads in my ammo cupboard but I've yet to get to the range or near a chrony with them.

Shouldn't be much trouble finding reduced load data - our ADI data lists 2250fps with the 175g as a max load!

I have a 1908 Mauser, in 7x57, with the Hornady's, it pops the primer 3/4 the way out, If I shoot regular green box Remington CoreLokt (closer to original spec's I'm told) everythings fine, and the rifles very accurate. I think the Hornadys are a wee bit to warm for the old rifles

I shot a couple of boxes of Norma 150gr fmj, then a couple of boxes of S&B 139gr and the S&Bs had more recoil and exposed a small glitch in my rifle. I corrected the problem and haven't had another issue, but the S&B and Privi Partisan acted the same, and were definately hotter than the Norma's.

The Norma ammo shot better...tigher groups with no fliers. I have a couple of boxes of 156gr oryx rounds and will probably stick with them for this rifle.

You might have a hot load, but equally it might be (or also be) that your firing pin tips are in need of being reprofiled by a gunsmith. If their tip is damaged, the primer metal will tend to flow into it and the gun won't open. In my instance, I had to put the old double shotgun over my knee to get it open. Hot loads will definately exacerbate this. If this is the problem, you'll see drag marks on the empty primer/s. You might also use a magnifying glass, (I use a small jeweler's lupe which is quite handy for looking at things like muzzle crown damage, proof marks, primer craters, etc). If the pin tips are damaged, the magnifying glass will show it. You might also look at how far the pins protrude and also if their function is OK. A drop of oil might help too. Once I had the tips reprofiled, no more problems.

I have used various 7x57R loads by S&B, Norma and RWS with no issues in 2 different combination guns, the S&B copper-capped factory load in a Franz Sodia Bockbüchsflinte just 3 days ago.
