New - Gibbs Styled Farquharson - Hot Off The Press !
      #140408 - 11/08/09 07:12 PM

Heres a couple of pics of my mates new re-designed Gibbs styled Farquharson falling block
he has just started making these & will be marketing them shortly .

He reckons they are made to "Best Gun" standards (they sure look like it !) & CNC machined from Boehler Tool steel with a coil spring in line striker .

He will have a Web Site up in a couple of weeks !

Wow that thing is nice looking!

How many has he built now?
Are there different action sizes?
What's the biggest/smallest cartridge he's building them for?

You getting out to hunt with one soon?

Cheers

Looks good. Please post more pictures and information as you get it.

Is the Farquharson the next classic SS design to make a comeback? It seems that a few outfits are tooling up to build them (Ballard is working on one as well but I have not seen any details).

Thanks guys , he will be pleased to hear that , Hell I will need to get more info , this is all I know on details that I can tell !

The receiver size on these is Ruger # 1 size ,so can fit most Cals , trigger is adjustable for weight and "Breaks like Glass" no castings used any where .

These are going to cost more than a Dakota but less than a English rifle , he said .

But he is still working on costs and pricing !

And no has not let me take it out hunting yet LoL ! !

He really should , being I have been a sounding boad on a fair bit of stuff around this !

Thank you Von Gruff !

Yes , fully made & designed in NZ , other than wood (grown in Turkey I think)

This is a whole new action in design , has a coil spring powered inline striker !

I can't give too much out until some protection is filed on the action design .

I have a couple more photos here , will try for more info later .

Hi Guys,

I am the designer and manufacturer of the Soroka model 07 falling block, which I have been working on for the last 2 and a half years. Firstly thanks for all the positive comments, they are greatly appreciated after what has been a fairly long haul.

I have not wanted to enter the cyber world just yet as I am extremely busy with web-site design, production, patent and numerous other final issues.
But as Sarg is being bombarded with PM questions I have to interject.....

Firstly it is 100% manufactured in New Zealand. Secondly, my action whilst looking like a later model Gibbs Farquharson is completely different inside. It uses a striker (firing pin) that is in-line with the bore that is powered by a chrome silicone coil spring. This gives extremely fast lock time and reliable ignition. The design also allows for dry firing which many single shot designs abhorr. Every single component in this action is either CNC'd or wire cut. All the major components- receiver, trigger plate, underlever, quarter rib are CNC'd from Boehler P 20 vaccuum re-melted billet bar stock, a couple of minor items, safety button and bar from 4140, the internal links and other components EDM wire cut from from 17-4 ph stainless ground plate. My machinists are are arguably the best 3d machinists in this part of the world. I can assure you it takes some doing to machine the compound curves found in this design. Ask anyone who knows.
Due to patent application issues I cannot disclose too much at the moment but I can tell you that the trigger breaks like a shard of glass and is weight adjustable. All the internal workings are mounted on the trigger plate like the original detachable trigger plate Gibbs which means that one can dis-assemble this in a minute or so by undoing 2 screws. With a screwdriver and a 4mm punch one can strip this action easily in camp or even the field but dont loose the extractor spring (the only thing that can really be lost in stripping). The cocking lever only rotates 32 degrees, as opposed to say a Ruger which is 55 degrees. It therefore requires slightly more effort to cock than the Ruger, but not offensively so, just a bit firmer. When operated it feels like an extremely high quality safe being closed. The extractor is set up for rimless cases.

I have taken no short cuts whatsoever in design, material selection, or manufacturing process. It has been made without compromise. I wanted to make the best single shot ever and this is the end result.
The action weighs 2.55 lbs. The rifle in the photos weighs 7.5lbs bare which in my opinion is the right weight for a 30 cal magnum, (which it is.)

Within 2 weeks I will have 6 completed actions and will be manufacturing the first serious production run of 25 shortly thereafter. I will only be offering complete rifles. The web site will be up and running within a week or so. The address will be www.sorokarifle.com.

Please give me another 2 weeks to dot the last of my i's and cross t's. In any event, I cannot legally sell any of these for the next 2 weeks or so because of N.Z laws regarding dealer licensing. Unfortunately for many, these rifles are going to be more expensive than say a Dakota 10 or a Miller. But will be significantly less that what a "top english named maker" would be asking for the same thing.

Once again I am glad many have enjoyed the end result.

Cheers for now.

Your job looks top notch seen from here

Rigbymauser, I think that the rim is going to pose a problem at 19mm od. A 505 Gibbs should work just fine and I believe with modern projectiles that will stop anything that needs to be stopped.
It also seems appropriate that the .505 be a Gibbs cartridge, given the history.......

Thanks MOG for the thumbs up and best wishes.

Cheers.

Scirocco, That is a georgous piece of workmanship, and you deserve all the sucess that such obvious quality should bring. Cheers Sarg for the initial posts. Have just put the updated information on the Campfire and I am sure you will be recieving enquiries for the many who will apreciate ( and can afford) such a rifle. Wish I could.

Well done, Sirrocco! I hope you give a discount to NZ residents, 'cause I'm thinking of retiring there before too long.

Good luck in your endeavour.

That is about the most unreal thing that goes bang that I have seen.

Incredible.

What a pair they would make in 300 H&H and 375 H&H.
