Ruger #1 450/400 diameter
      #135800 - 21/05/09 09:22 AM

hi has anyone actually measured or slugged the bore diameter of the new ruger #1's? I think I have decided on the #1 and now was thinking either the 9.3x74r or the 450/400 3".

I just started reloading and no matter what one i pick i will NOT be buying any factory ammo. If the 450/400 is .411 there is a possibility of using lighter 41 mag bullets. The 9.3 has some lighter bullets but only go 46gr lighter than the factory ammo. I really want one of these calibers but also want to shoot some lighter rounds.

any guidance would be great>
thanks,
mike

You can use 41 mag bullets in a 450/400.

450/400 is normally between .408 and .411 (the 2 sizes of bullets Woodleigh make.

I put either down the spout.

Why don't you call Ruger and ask them the bore dimensions of their .450/.400? If I recall correctly they made it .410" but I'm not sure.

Let me recommend a bullet I am using in my .450/.400 3.25".

It's a 265 grain cast bullet with gas check. Cheap as dirt and a tackdriver in my Woodward double.

To load it down you could probably use 5744 (which I have not used).

I am loading it using standard Nitro-for-Black techniques with Varget powder and a couple of foam wads. I am duplicating Kynoch ballistics for the .450/.400 3.25" NfB load - 1850 fps.

You also have the choice of Hornady's 300 grain interlock RN bullet.

Your Ruger will be a great choice with this round.
