Alex Henry without the Ruger forearm.
      #70650 - 02/02/07 08:03 AM

For those of us that like to buy our rifles one barrel at the time, here are a few photos of my deer rifle. I say that in jest because I have yet to have a shot at a deer while carrying this rifle, and I have carried it a lot. Carrying this gun used to make me feel like I was going to see a deer any moment. I wouldn't mind breaking it in on a hog but might have to settle for a hard shell possum.
The Alex Henry is a 450 3.25 inch BPE with a 28 inch barrel. Since it is a takedown, I guess Mr. Henry decided to forego the Ruger forearm and put a lever release on instead. The Henry weighs 6 3/4 pounds, all of it in the right places, and is a dream to carry.

Alex Henry 1

Alex Henry 2

Alex Henry 3

Hope you like it!

Josh, that is a very clean looking action. I bet it will make up into a great stalking rifle, unless someone that thinks it looks like a Sharps has it.

Thats a Steve Earl Wesson action. I have one on order, and have had for nearly 2 years, its a looong wait. I believe he has raised the price on them.....almost 1500$ if memory serves. Excellent stuff from all I hear. I'm getting ready, last I heard he was a few numbers away from mine.

Degoins, mine was #23 and Mike Lewis is building it into a 38-50 Remington-Hepburn BPCR silhouette rifle.

He is just building me the action and I got word the other day that he is close. I need to measure it up when I get it, but I'm planning on .450 #2. I already have a Krieger 28" barrel waiting for it. Maybe a quarter rib, one standing and one folding leaf. No need to tart up such classic lines with a scope, this one is for getting up close and personal. Here lil Buffalo.....

FWIW, the Wesson action is almost a straight copy of the Alex Henry action, which by itself was based on the Sharps, but a bit prettier....
Bouldersmith, the cartridge you are going for is that 500/450 #2 Musket, of the 450 #2? I'm kinda partial to the #2 Musket myself.

Alexander Henry was one of the best rifle makers in the world at the turn of the century. That is one nice single shot you have there.

Cheers to good hunting.

the .450 # 2 is my prefference. Its such a nice looking cartridge....so big, thick rim. I already have a .450 3&1/4 ne reamer, but I would rather go with the # 2. The next question is who to get to engrave it like a Henry. I've been looking through my book and picking patterns. I was using an excellent engraver, but he is having health issues. I recently recieved a quote of 6-12K....ouch, thats out of my league. I think I'll add a stalking safety....why go half way when you can go full monty. Should be a fun gun.

Sinner
Thanks for the observation. I share your opinion of these rifles.

How does the stalking safety work on this new action? One difference I note is the hammer seems to overlap the action some. Would you be able to come in from the back of the hammer? The safety my Alex Henry has is not all that handy, coming in from the front like it does.

Charlie,
the Wesson does not have a stalking safety as it comes from Steve Earle. Most of these actions are being set up for BPC competition. That isn't my style, but big bore single shots are. I'm going to add the stalking safety myself. I can see how in front of the hammer on a right hand lock would not be that handy, but thats how Henry did them. I want a big bore nitro cartridge on a Henry....something he never made, now I have my chance.

Boulder, that Wesson is turning out great. The engraving is perfect and that English flows perfectly. Very nice job!

Thats not my work, Mr. Doug Mann is responsible for the wood and Ken Hurst the scratching. It is very nice though.

Boulder, I thought the engraving looked familiar. Ken did a Sharps rifle for me a while back but I got shanked by the rifle builder pretty bad and they bought the POS back from me. I really hate losing that Hurst engraving job and the English walnut I sent them for the stock. Live and learn I guess. That looks to me like a great custom rifle.

I had an e-mail from Steve Earle at the end of March stating that he had just sent out #52. He also stated that the next 30 receivers were at about the 90% stage - in the milling I take from context. All other parts for those he had on hand. I can't recall exactly, but I believe the one earmarked for me is in that group. It is a long wait, but has allowed me to accumulate more knowledge and thoughts for the ultimate rifle once I get it.
