Farquharson rebarrel?
      #179287 - 18/04/11 12:07 AM

Well, I've done it again...
I got into another gun in need of work, and of course it will take much more than anticipated.
This one, a Farquharson 450/400 needs a rebarrel - the chamber was pitted and the hope was that a setback and rechamber would clean it up. Not even close...
So, I am now in the position to decide what I want this gun to be.
It is a .500 sized frame and very stout. Too stout for the 450/400 really which would have been swell to shoot but just begging to be something bigger.
So, heres what I am thinking,
Either a 470 or a 450 No.2
Bullet selection has me leaning toward the 450 but the 470 is appealing in the event that I would need to sell it some day.
Any opinions?

Why not go with the 500? That would be my first choice followed by the 450.

I'd go 450 3 1/4" over 450 No 2 just because of ease of brass and loading.

I may need to be going with the 450 3-1/4 if I want to keep the forend with the gun and keep the original barrel contour which is nice.
I think that for the No.2 or 470, the channel would need to be opened up and the forend doesn't look like it would take it.
Another option is to go for a full boat resto with new wood and everything but I don't know if I can stomach that right now.
It is a neat action though and more stout than any other I have had or held

I was going to mention that as well (barrel contour et al)
but thought you'd know that.

If the wood is still good, I would keep it. I have seen the odd restocked Farq and I don't reckon they look nearly as good as the often dark wood that is on them. Just my HO.

As a suggestion for this project.. Mr Glenn Fewless has done a spectacular job with the Farquie already as well as a wonderful job on a full boat restoration of my Alex Henry.
I'm sure that he'd do that rifle justice.

I'd be leaning towards a 450 3 1/4 instead of another caliber if a chamber bushing won't clear it up. I'm not sure that this would work with a nitro cartridge though.

Or you could easily have it lined and go a touch smaller possibly the 375 Flanged Magnum?

Ben,
Remember if you decide to go with a 470 I have a brand new reamer.

AKmike,
How about some photos of the AH full restoration, as I have an AH in .500BPE which is in need of the same job.

I don't think you can go wrong with the 450 3-1/4. Rigby made more of their Farquharsons in that caliber than any other. I think there must have been a reason for that.

It is going to be a .450.
Either a 450 3-1/4NE or a 450No.2
The barrel has been ordered but I am not sure if it has arrived at Steve Bertram's shop yet. A couple other projects are needing completion before this one gets too much attention.

Huvius, I would go for the .450 3.25" NE. Brass is far more available.

Forget the 450 #2.

Brass is expensive and quality spotty.

Personally, I have a soft spot for the 500/450 NE. You can form it from 470 with ease and get head-stamped brass if needed.

The 450 NE is the logical choice and is probably the way I will go.
I just have a thing for alternatives to the norm.
