New Holland & Holland Single Shot Rifle
      #141191 - 27/08/09 01:13 AM

There has already been a little talk about it so I thought I would share. This is the falling block rifle that H&H is building for me. The photo was taken a good while ago and I expect to have some new photos within the next few days. More to follow.

Grenadier, I saw the action in the white. They have put a very nice piece of timber on that best

What action is it? It is at least not a Farquharson - but a Dakota or a Hagn?

Nice wood and a beautiful british stock shape.

So that's what it's like at H&H! I thought they'd have baize-covered workbenches, embroidered with warrant heraldry. Nice rifle, for all that.

It is a Hagn type falling block action with a British style safety. The shape and style follow an original H&H falling block rifle that they have at the London showroom. The engraving will also be in the traditional H&H single shot style.

450, everyone knows you need binos for detail work! How do you think they get such precise wood to metal fit? Sheesh!

Nice piece of wood too. I can't wait to see the finished rifle.

Here is a picture of the other side. The wood is best on this side but you can't really see it in the picture. Also, this was taken before the tang was altered. Using the London showroom's original rifle as a guide, the upper tang is getting extended and shaped in the old style. Both this picture and the picture above were taken months ago. I hope to have newer pictures very soon.

C'mon...
Everyone knows the binoculars ar truly there because the H&H workshop is directly across the street from St. Mary's Preparatory Academy!
And all along they claimed that they needed natural light to work by!

Huvius, maybe that's why it takes them so long to make a rifle! All those interruptions.

The wood shown above looks pretty incredible to me, so if that picture doesn't show it well...WOW!

Very nice - H&H are bringing back some of their lovely old designs that they had forgotten about themselves beginning with the Paradox guns which they brought back a few years ago and now a single shot design. Do keep posting more of this pure gun porn as your project progresses at H&H.

Good hunting!

Grenadier,
That is going to be one exquisitely beautiful rifle. What calibre have you chosen? And yes, please do keep us up to date with photos if you can.
Best regards

Beautiful rifle in a classic cartridge. Grenadier, can you take us (me) through the whole process of ordering a gun like this please? Also, are they extending the top strap over the nose of the comb?
Cheers, Chris

Chris,

I know of two ways to purchase a rifle from Holland & Holland - either purchase a new rifle "off the rack" or have one made to your specifications.

My rifle is the first new single shot made so there aren't any other new single shots ready to buy in the showroom yet.

To get a rifle made to order, the process is relatively straight forward. You contact Holland & Holland and say that you are considering ordering a new single shot. They will discuss the various options, make recommendations if you desire, and work up a quote. When I ordered mine I had various choices about barrel, sights, finish, engraving, etc. You also get the stock made to your measurements. As expected, price will vary depending upon the options and refinements you choose.

Regarding your question about the top tang, I was given the opportunity to order the rifle with a top strap that would go over the comb of the stock. I didn't request it because my rifle is a .300 and it isn't needed. Their larger actions may have that feature as standard but please confirm that with H&H.

To the best of my knowledge, the most informed person to speak to regarding ordering the new single shot is Guy Davies at the New York Gunroom. H&H New York Gunroom

I just received some updated pictures.

Here is a picture of the tang modified to the old H&H falling block style:

Christopher,

You asked: "... how much ...?"

H&H quoted a "standard" price and a "deluxe" price with pricing similar to that of their bolt action rifles. The options I ordered necessitated the deluxe category. Among the bigger options I requested were the long style H&H spearpoint sight blocks, deluxe wood (one step up from standard), and deluxe engraving.

I specified many features. I went to London to pick out the wood and received a fitting for stock measurements. I asked them to copy the stock shape of an old rifle they had. I specified the type of safety. I chose the sights and scope mounts. I chose the recoil pad, type of sling eye, grip cap, finish, and more. I even asked for a barrel length that would make it balance a certain way and they diligently worked that out by trial and error. It will be a "bespoke" gun in every sense.

I consider the pricing a realistic reflection of many man-hours by skilled hands to create a high quality firearm of individual manufacture.

Mate,

Nitpicking but: I'd have reservations abt the profile of the tang safety particularly on the return and the minor amendments to what are apparent generic Talley scope rings. (cost vs inherent value)

BTW nice wood. (Turk, Oz or hybrid?)

Open for discussion.

kamilaroi,

I had the option of nearly any kind of scope mounting system available and the price of the mounts and rings was dependent upon the system I chose. I considered several, including claw mounts, EAW type swing mounts, and the Holland & Holland mounts. I have the H&H quick detachable system on another single shot and, in my opinion, it is the strongest and best. I will carry this rifle more often without a scope than with a scope and I wanted to maintain the cleanest possible profile when the scope is removed. I went with the system you see because it leaves nothing behind when detached.

Regarding the safety, I had considered requesting it modified to the shape of the old specimen rifle. But I had a chance to handle the action and found the current safety provided a solid purchase against my thumb. I didn't want to change a good thing and to me the difference in the shape of the safeties is subtle.

The rifle is made to order. Holland & Holland was very attentive to my tastes and priorities.

Congratulations on what I am sure will be a fine rifle. Your post answered my only query - the scope appears mounted very high, but if it will be mostly carried without scope, then I assume the stock fit is primarily for the iron sights. Lovely wood. Look forward to seeing the finished article and engraving!
