Wow! Great caliber on the rifle. I have a IMMAN MEFFERT with 7x57 and it may be my favorite drilling!

Great Maker & Great Drilling!

...circa 1968-72???

It is somewhat unusual to find side-cock guns. They are my favorite configuration, as one can cock/uncock the rifle.

That is pre-war for sure. I dont belive that Greifelt made it past WWII.

The date appears to be 9/39 (very faint stamping). Barrel length 24.5", weight 7 pounds, 4 ounces, length of pull 14", drop at comb 1.75", drop at heel 3".

Was it re-stocked about 30 years ago?

I really couldn't say if the drilling has been restocked, since I acquired it quite recently. The stock design appears to be identical with the 201 Model I find illustrated in a reprint of a Greifelt catalog from the '30's, although the checkering pattern is somewhat different.

All of my drillings with the exception of the 12 gauge/8X60R Greifelt have the side lever cocking device for the rifle barrel, which I prefer to the slide used in later Krieghoffs. It is very easy to cock and uncock the rifle barrel action noiselessly and safely, using the left hand, and in the case of the J.P Sauer drilling, it positions the safety on the action tang, where, in my opinion, it belongs.

I find the Greener type safeties very hard to manipulate while wearing gloves. Releasing the safety is not so difficult, but in re-engaging it I find it easier to simply use the left hand. The same is true of the safety lever on the prewar S & K Neptun.

The white-line spacers made me think it was re-stocked about then, or maybe re-finished and freshened...

The Greener side safeties can be made much easier to use for jump shooting by filing the button flat and soldering on a higher one. I did this to several over the years, and was pleased with the added ease in manipulating them with the higher button. As drillings were used in stands, they didn't much worry about getting the safety off fast for jump shooting.

I'm with you regarding the Sauer system with the side levers and top tang safties! They are the the perfect design for my tastes.
