Custom 45.100 Sharps on a Greener Martini Action.
      #77317 - 24/04/07 01:02 PM

I have just bought a 45.100 sharps custom rifle built on a Greener Martini Shotgun Action. This rifle is a take down and has express sites. I can not pick it up for about 8 weeks so time is going to drag.

Can any one tell me about the strength of this action and the cartridge. The only thing I can find on the cartridge is in the cartridges of the world. The rifle has been tested with both black powder and nitro loads. When I get my hands on it, I will try to puts some pics on the forum.

I would like to be able to safely get 2200 fps with a 300 grain projectile with the nitro load. Is it possible out of the cartridge. This would be about 27,000PSI I believe and have been told that this would be safe in the rifle.

I got 2200 fps out of a 480 gr. bullet in a Martini Henry. Not pleaseant shooting at all. It was all i could do to hold onto the rifle.

You have a Greener Martini. With it's humpback it should be much more controllable. It will also help if it has a sporting butt stock an not the small military stock.

Look in the 47th edition of the Lyman book, they have loads for the 45-120 shooting 300grs at 2700fps with low pressures in rolling blocks or sharps actions, might be somewhat of a guide for you.

Thank you doubleD and georgegibbs505.

The action was orginally a Greener shotgun and now it has a sporting stock which is much better than the Martini Henry. I will go check the Lyman book, although the 45-120 is a bit bigger than 45-100. I will work up loads starting with some of my nitro loads that I have used in the rolling block 45.70 with a 28" barrel which gave 2350 fps with a 300 grain at 27,000psi.

450 - what is the length of case this rifle is chambered for.
: The original .45/100 load was used in 2.4", 2.6" as well as the 2-7/8" case so a case length designation is much more accurate than by powder charge. The .45 2-7/8" was also loaded with 120gr. and was the 'original' .45-120 of the 1880's. The modern 3-1/4" case was never chambered by Sharps in the 800's, but there was a .45-120 Winchester round which used the British case. Some Sharps rifles may have been chambered to the Winchester case on the frontier.
: Your heavy .45/70 loads are a good place to start.
: Accurate Arms might also have data for the shorter than 3-1/4" cases.

Daryls.

The case is 2.6" and the barrel is 24" long.
