Mauser 66

At the risk of being burned at the stake for heresy, I would like to bring up the subject of the Mauser 66. I have always turned up my nose at this aberration, but today I stumbled over the following auction and wondered if my contempt was misplaced.

This purports to be the untimate all round rifle, and who knows, perhaps it is. Certainly it represents the possibility of putting the right medicine for plains game, thin skinned dangerous game and thick skinned dangerous game all in one package.

Has anyone had experience with this rifle and the barrel swap system?

This is a 66S in 7x64 with (former) Swarovski Nova 1,5-6x42 in EAW swingout mount.

Real top quality, the production was stopped in the seventies because of cost. This rifle (a Walther Gehman development) was way ahead of its time. Blaser took inspiration from the switch barrel system.

5 shots are a group.

I know a hunter that uses his customized Mauser 66 quite successful, his one is in .460 Weatherby Magnum with muzzlebrake and laminated stock. The Mauser 66 has some fans here in Germany but others (like me) prefer a CRF Mauser 98 for hunting DG. Both will work so its a matter of personal preference. The Mauser 66 is sold quite regularly at www.egun.de.

To my eye it looks better than newer rifles of its type. It was reviewed as strong and accurate when released but as having the handle to far forward for DG use. Also, the railed bolt came back too far to work with your face on the comb. As with other types, barrels could only be exchanged within calibre groups. One writer lamented the lack of one in .425 WR that might be swapped for standard-calibre barrels. I'd expect magazine problems to scuttle that idea, however.
