.244 HV Magnum Halger
      #190229 - 19/09/11 05:38 PM

This is very interesting caliber. 6,5x57 necked down to 6mm/.243 bullet. It would be nice caliber in Mauser for smaller game.
I know there is 6mm Remington which is very similar, but does Halger have any advantages over Remington (shoulder angle)?
Does anyone have any more info about the .244 Halger and rifles made for it? Is there measurements?

From memory the Halger series were "promoted" if you understand the advertising implications. Some English cartridges much the same.

Yes I know the fact that this caliber is not the hottest varminter in world.
With advantages I mean lover pressures, better feeding... Im not huge fan of extreme velocities.

Just reread an article in DWJ 7/2000 on a 244 Halger rifle and cartridge by Guenter Freres. G.Freres was the head ballistician of DWM once and developed the 5.6x50(R) cartidge among many other loads, so he may know what he writes about. The original proprietary with it's fantastic ballistics, 87 gr at 3280fps, needed a 28" barrel and extraordinary pressure, more than 4000at. To contain this pressure, original cases were steel, as brass would not stand it. Interestingly, the original Halger rifle he describes is built on a standard commercial Mauser Oberndorf 98 action. The 244Halger shares case body dimensions with the 6.5x57, so the body is slightly longer than the .244/6mm Remington. Shoulder angle of the Halger is 19 degrees, compared to 26 degrees of the Remington, so no advantage here. The worst thing last: the Halger used an unusual bullet diameter of .253"! It was named for it's bore diameter. So, IMHO, trying to revive the .244 Halger seems to be an extraordinary bum idea, creating nothing more than a .244 Rem with an overload of problems: Finding a proper barrel blank, a proper reamer, custom made bullets and so on. Wildcatting the 6.5x57 to take .243" bullets would be just another wildcat, but not a .244" Halger. Advantages of such a wildcat over standard factory numbers would be theoretical at best. And, a hot-loaded .257 Roberts would probably do the same things.

OK, that is something new. Thanks! Still very interesting caliber and very interesting company. There is something cool about old and rare european calibers.
