Neale - I have some data in the old Speer #8 manual for the 6.5 x 57 Mauser also known as the 6.5mmx.257 Roberts.
There are minor differences in the case shape to the one given in the Vihtavuori manual's 6.5x57 for some reason. They are close enough that data is interchangable, though. What weight bullets are you interested in?
87gr. @ up to 3,334fps
100gr. @ up to 3,060fps
120gr. @ up to 2,889fps
140gr. @ up to 2,666fps

Judging by the velocities given, I suspect these aren't loaded to 57,000psi.
Incidently, the data from the Speer manual was developed in a BRNO Mauser rifle. If you want, e-mail me for the data.
dtsapergia@shaw.ca I'll photograph it and mail it back by return mail. If you have access to Vit. powders, I'll send it as well.

Oh - just checked the Hornady manual has it as well - all IMR powders, so it should be available on their web site.
According to the mannual, they ran 160gr. RN's to 2,800fps. That means that speed was within pressure limits and still gave good accuracy. They stopped 140's at 2,700fps and 129's at 2,800, with 95gr. and 100's at 3,100fps.

Like you I think those velocities are a little low.

I think it would be a great cartridge to have a play with and I have never owned a 6.5.

160gr 6.5mm bullets at 2800 FPS will get it done.
No problem.
Just make sure your bullet is up to the velocity.

I've gotten fantastic penetration with the Hornady 160RNSN at under 2200fpsMV -- and more launch speed that bullet sheds a lot of it's mass on the way through. Mondo velocity doesn't seem necessary.

That 2800fps number can give you some range if your rifle shoots the long bullets accurately.

Cheers
Tinker

This one seems to have a prefence for the 125-140 class bullet. As soon as I can I will check the twist and put together some faster 160's,my first batch was only about 2300fps.I would think this will do anything a 6.5x55 would...

For most 6.5's to shoot even 140gr. bullets a 9" twist is required. If you are looking at 140gr. TSX - the twist might have to be faster yet.

My Daughter's .260 Rem shoots everything from 85gr. to 160gr. into 1/2" or less, using a barrel made by Jeff Lawrence. It's truly amazing & has a 9" twist. The 120gr. XLC's it likes, are the same length as the 140gr. Interlocks it also likes. I do not know if it will shoot the 140gr. TSX or not. The 120's will handle everything she's ever likely to shoot, from deer to elk.

My 6.5x68 shooting Buddy put an early 120gr. "X" beside the bung hole on a mature (dry) cow moose at a range of just over 300yards. The bullet stopped just under the hide at the front of her chest, having lost 2 petals in it's journey. She braced her feet at impact and just stood there for 10 or 15 seconds, then collapsed. The 120gr. was just stable in his rifle with a 10" twist. The lung cavity was full of congealed blood when we opened her up. The lungs had a 2" diameter hole through the big part, with the bullet hitting exactly in the middle, disrupting both.

With the right type of bullet in a small bore, a light bullet can be just as effective as the heavier ones, or even more so. It's certainly a LOT flatter shooting.

My daughter's .260 makes over 3,000fps (26") with the 120's and having a couple gr. more capacity, the 6.5x57 should do the same, I'm sure.
