Amberg 1918/1919 sporter

Just restoring an rare "Gewehrfabrik (riflefactory ) Amberg 98 sporter.....
The riflefactory made between nov. 1918 till end of 1919 very few sporter or Pirschbüchsen for the civilian market, just to keep the employes in work. Also there excisting very few from riflefactory Danzig and Erfurt.
Stock is the prewar type with large sideplates, stamped with Amberg logo, also the right side of the system is marked with Gew.F Amberg. Chambered for 8x57 Is ,almost all parts are modified from military parts,trigger is the french type . No civilian proof marks, only the military proofstamp- bavarian lion.
Mounted with an suhler einhak , not known by now if this was made in fabric or later. Scope is an Goerz 3x sniper type with an other rifle sn. Mounting is similar to the bavarian sniper rifles before 1918.
Highest SN from Amberg i know is 9xx.

I am just working on the stock, when i finished i give more pics.
The trigger is called in germany "Französicher Rückstecher", i dont know to translate this corect.
Its an kind of an single set trigger, if you push the trigger forward it sets.
Usually this kind of trigger was used in combination guns.

Typical for bolt action at this time in germany was the double set trigger.

forward set trigger or rear set trigger

interesting specialty, I suspect in 8x57 or later reamed out to 8x60?

Ok, thanks - it is an forward set trigger.
Chambering is original, 8x57 IS.

the good thing about this sporter is you could see it was made in amberg(bavaria) at 1000 meter. I dont believe Erfurt or Danzig made the stock with the bavarian checkpiece but have the common german checkpiece.
without the amberg logo on the stock one could believe it's a later gunmaker work build of an Amberg made Gewehr 98?

The Erfurt and Danzig stocks have the "normal" checkpiece.
The interesting point is that it is definetely not an later conversion, this are the only rifles that ever made in german state firms for the comercial market, also it is definetely dated between 1918-1919. (All state factorys where closed at end of 1919)
You must remember that it was forbidden in 1918 to own military rifles for civilians, so the stocks and the systems were clearly signed to get no problem with this. Also this rifle is chambered in original 8x57 IS, treaty of versaille was later and this one survived to be chambered in 8x60.
There where no extras that could be orderd, only this type, no other chambering, no other stock, no engraving.

Very nice rifle. Looks like the stock has a lot of drop at the heel.
