Dating a couple of Mauser rimfires
      #198399 - 02/01/12 09:08 AM

Hello all

Hoping someone can date a couple of Mauser rimfires.

First one

Serial number 213879. Registered as Model 410

Safety on cocking piece.

Magazine well is well forward of the trigger gaurd

It is a sporter, with open sights.

Very nice two stage trigger.

In almost every way a miniature 98

Roundel on butt stock

Right side of action

Left side of action

Underside

Butt plate

Mauser logo on front action ring

Side view of the scope

Looking the the look through mounts

Top view of scope

What does this inscription say

It came with a Landlicht type E scope, would this have been standard fare for such a rifle?

Second one

Serial number 38281. Registered as a model 92

Safety is where bolt release would normally be on a 98

Magazine well is hard up against the trigger gaurd.

It is a sporter, but has no open sights.

Nice two stage trigger.

Bolt has two diameters. Larger in the back half.

EDIT: This one is cock on close, the other one on open
Left side of action

Underside showing magazine retainer

Bolt

Mauser logo on front action ring

Interesting keyhole in barrel just forward of stock, maybe for a sling?

The only thing on the barrel that suggests it may have had open sights

Fore stock

I'll try and get some photos tonight if required.

Many thanks

CF

The first one is a model Mm410B which was designed as a small game hunting rifle rather than a target model. The serial number tells us that it was made about 1935-1938. Scope would probably have been added later, not installed at the factory. Not sure what the second one is without photos.

Very nice Mm410B. The second one is a model Ms420 built sometime around 1928 according to the serial number. The keyhole in the barrel held a threaded nut to capture a sling swivel which also secured the stock fore end. It is exposed because the stock fore end has been cut back. Rear sight appears missing. I might also add that the value here in the US of the Mm410B with period scope & mounts would be $2000-$2500.

DRP = Deutsches Reichspatent = German patent
DRGM = Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster = protected design
Inscription found on all Mauser B smallbores.
The Gerard, Berlin "Landlicht scope is contemporary. Such small 22mm scopes by various makers were originally mounted on customer's request. But the icing on the cake are the rare original Mauser factory scope mounts, see John Speed's book:"Mauser Smallbores", page 95. (The rest of the book may be of interest too) Usually these rifles are found with contemporary scopes and contemporary aftermarket mounts, mostly lever-type ones by AKAH.

Thankyou for the info. Very enlightening.

kuduae, I will be trying to procure that book in the next month. I have two expos and a gun show, all in Feb, so should get lucky at one of them.

dons, The Mm410B is a lovely little thing, it comes up nicely and feels good in the hands and looks real good for a 70 something rifle. I think value of the Mm410B is similar here, I know someone that knocked back $3500 for his (much similar condition). I didn't pay anywhere near that for mine though and only curiosity value for the Ms420. I would like an original one and a single shot sporter rimfire and a rimfire "trainer" from the same period, to go with the Mm410B.

Cheers

CF

EDIT: I also have the bottom metal, screws, trigger and magazine for another Mm410B, might look about for a lesser one to build up and use.
