What's this?

Hello dear Mauser forumers,

Please help me in identifying this gun that used to belong to my father's friend's grandfather.

Clearly, it's a Mauser model 98 from 1915 in 8x57 IS caliber, ok so far.
The manufacturing year suggests a military application that has since been sporterized.

Q's:
Has it originally been fitted with a long stock?
Presumably yes, look at the "cut" by the front sling swivel.

Are the sights original?
The rear sight looks so complex, yet works so smoothly it can only be original...
The front sight looks odd to me.

What are the stamps on the rear stock?
Sorry about the poor picture. Do they seem more like factory or proof house markings, or some military markings?

Seems the numbers on the bolt have been overstamped and replaced with new numbers.
