a .404 rising from the dust

I took pity on this old gal. It required WAY too much work to be worth while financially, but I am a sucker sometimes. I acquired the stock, which had been altered for and aftermarket and very shoddy bottom metal, the barrel with an excellent bore and the original bolt. The action was missing and wood had been opened up too much for any bottom metal that was available. I had Steve Button at Sound Metal Products fit one of their bottom metal to a 1906 Oberndorf action I patiently waited to get my hands. After getting it back from Steve I cut off his trigger guard and welded a 1909 trigger guard on to replicated the Oberndorf look. A new Horn grip cap was also fabricated to replace the missing one. I still have a bit to do, but it is getting close now. This gun was Jefferies high grade model and it will go out to Charles Lee soon for some Proper scroll work soon. One advantage of the new bottom metal is that the gun now holds 4 down.

Nice hunting rifle! Are you happy with the rifle? That's the important thing, not what it cost or how much trouble it gave - are you happy you did it & satisfied with the work?

Well done . In my humble opinion that is exactly what the "Classic English Bolt Rifle" looks like !!!! I would not worry one bit about how much it cost. It just looks great !!!!!!

That rifle will get the job done - and in style.

I have seen quite a bit of Charles' engraving, both before and after colour-hardening. He is indeed a very good hand.

Rarely is the engraving such a perfect balance for the rest of the rifle but this is georgous.

Is there such a thing as a magazine stripper clip that will hold 3 or 4 rounds (whatever the mag capacity) of .404's? That would be cool, for such an iron sighted rifle. They are very handy for an iron sighted hunting rifle.

I have often wondered that myself, would be just the thing for an elephant cull, a bandolier with a half dozen or so clips of 404 rounds across the shoulder and a clip in midair as one has had a fast reload of the mag and pulls down on another ele

Well maybe should change that to an Aussie buffalo cull, perhaps a bit more PC

By the way that is damn fine 404.

A friend of mine has an early .404 made by Mauser of Oberndorf and marked with the same script on the front receiver ring as yours. Which is to say that, it was made before this cartridge was, according to some references, even released. It is, however, the original caliber. The very early ones had slightly different bore/groove sizes. Probably not enough to be an issue with bullet selection, but it might be worth slugging the bore if only for interests sake. I'm not too sure now what my information source was, but Hatari Times had a good write up on the .404 and, if you can find this back-issue, I'm sure you'll find it interesting.

The barrel is set with Jeffrey's "standard" engraving. The action and floorplate follow fairly closely upon such though the cuts appear to be further refined.

A nice bit of kit.

Yes, you can use french MAS36 stripper clips. Will need to open the guide on the receiver thou.
That was the cool thing of the .425WR, fed right off standard GeWehr98 clips

Very very nice, I love the engraving, very well done and not to much, good balance. Taking an old rifle in a bad condition and restoring it is most probably the most satifactory project to undertake.
