I recently picked up this William Evans .404 Jeffery.
I've wanted a .404 for a while - this fits the bill nicely.

Any input as to the function of the little screw on the side of the rear ring?
Seems to keep the extractor pushed against the shell as it is ejected.

Good looking piece. Is it a mag action?

I especially like the forend checkering which extends almost to the cap and is squared at the end. I have an early GH springfield which has the same checkering pattern.

Huvius,
It might help fired cases to clear the right action rail during ejection.
I've seen a couple of 98's which had their extractor claw modified for smooth feeding, that had trouble ejecting the last case in the mag, especially if the bolt wasn't worked back fast.
The last fired case would drop down toward the follower as it cleared the chamber during extraction, due to the now empty mag, then as ejection was taking place the case would snag on the right rail, fail to eject and end up sitting back on top of the follower.
This was caused by lack of extractor claw pressure on the case rim as the claw had been modified to aid cartridge feeding.

Just a guess on my part, and the screw's function is likely to be something completely different.

Very nice rifle by the way.

Standard length Mauser action. It has had the little "ears" on the stripper clip slot removed though. This seems to accomplish the same thing that removing the front portion on the right side of the rear bridge does on a Jeffery but removes a lot less metal.

So what is the story with the "screw"?
