Photos of my 1910 and Questions Also

Below are photos of my model 1910 Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle. I have not yet loaded for or fired this rifle. Caliber is the 1910 caliber, 9.5x56 MM. Barrel length, to bolt face, is 19 11/16". Markings show that it was originally proofed in Austria in 1920 and then proofed in Germany in August, 1927.

The stock has been modified and refinished. It appears to have been dropped once or more. The toe of the butt was split, glued and pinned with dowels. The fore grip was split on the right side from the sling swivel escutcheon forward and glued. I think both repairs may have been made at the same time, based on appearance. I suspect that the butt pad was added then as well. The finish feels like polyurethane so it may have been done later.

Questions: Is this barrel length typical for a rifle? How common/uncommon are ball end bolt handles? What is on the bottom of the butt stock just past the fore grip? It looks like some form of writing but I have not been able to match it up to Hindi, Pakistani, Thai, Persian or Arabic.
