Project 6.5X54 MS
      #231121 - 12/06/13 11:01 PM

I have a gunsmithing friend that asked me a while back what I'd like to make next. I had to think on that but came up with a 6.5X55. That's when he said "How about a 6.5X54 MS?". I had never heard of that round. The reason he suggested that was because he was given a 1903 action and he said he'd give it to me. When I first saw it I was amazed at how smooth it was considering the condition it's in. There was quite a bit of rust and pitting but all cosmetic. It is physically sound. We just installed a barrel and test fired it a couple days ago and it tested out just fine.

My plan is to give it a parkerized finish after all the fitting is done. I have found a wild cherry tree that should produce a stock blank with some good figure to make the stock from.

My main reason for this post is to see if anyone on here can shed some light as to when this action was made. The serial numbers do not match on anything that I could see. The bolt knob is round and solid, not hollow. I will try to post some pictures.

This is the serial number on the right side near the front of the action.

This is on the bottom of the action just behind the recoil lug.

Good action to build on. Many custom rifles were built on the Greek Military actions by the British arms makers.
The Model is 1903. ( I was told the (prefix) 'Y' in the Greek language is the first letter in the word meaning 'Model',,that would make sense, but it's only what I was told.)
Made on contract for the Greek Military.
Made at Steyr Works in Austria in 1906.
Part of the first contract for Military rifles and carbines for the Greek Govt.
Contract ran 1903 to 1913. Each production year marked on the left side rail along w/ 'Steyr'
Second contract started 1914 w/small changes to the rifle and carbine. Actions marked '(19)03/14'
Post WW1 some rifles were contracted by Breda (Italy) and are so marked on the ring. Same action as the 03/14 but the Steyr marked actions bring a better premium on a sporter.

IIRC the rifles had straight extended bolt handles and the carbines had the turned down handles.
I may be wrong on the latter and it's just been turned down later by someone that sportered it already.

I have a Geo. Gibbs rifle built on a Steyr Greek 1907(?) action and bbl. Very nice sporter in 256 Gibbs Magnum.

Good luck w/your project.

I'd do a bit of polishing to the action and give it a nice rust blue finish when done.

Mike,
That is absolutely gorgeous!! I look at your work and think of how much I could learn from someone like you! The pitting on my action is fairly deep in spots and I think I'd take too much metal to polish it like yours. I do believe I can get it better than it is though. People are suggesting rust blueing but this is going to be a carry all day, in all types of weather game killing rifle and I've always liked the looks of a parkerized weapon and that type of finish is durable and rust resistant.
Again Mike, your work is exquisite!!

Here is how it ended up. The stock is made of cherry. To mount the scope I TIG welded a Picatinny rail to the barrel and put a long eye relief Scout scope on it. It has a fold down rear sight that is dovetailed into the rail.
