"NEW" C. G. Haenel 9x57 with questions or an history
      #157125 - 22/03/10 04:52 PM

I am, so far, the proud owner of a recently aquired Mannlicher C.G. Hanael. This one in my long desired 9x57 Mauser. It has some unusual aspects and seems to have some history and questions of where and when it was made and used. I do believe it in most part all original but maybe a suprise or two.
I will have photos later when I have a working camera again. I will post some unsolved "proof" markings and as some questions as to why some would be on the rifle (carbine?) and what may be some meanings. The condition is very good with some use wear for it's age. I believe this was a working and used hunting rifle and may have been custom for the owner along the way. Oddly, 21 inch barrel, Germanic rifle stock configuration with very nice checkering and schable forend and side panels. half octogon and half round barrel with integral rib that ends in a peried ramp with pinned bead blade. Notched on the striker for the Rigby style peep (this was missing but I happen to have one!). Double set trigger and steel butt plate.
All the serials numbers match through out the metal and would. Including the set triggers.
I am excited to see more and shoot the rifle. I have slugged the bore and am surprised to have a .359 bore and not a .354-.356. I will need to see if a .358 diameter bullet and neck will chamber. More to come.

I'm excited!? Hey, it is just in line for my collection and should be pretty handy for Alaska Black bear and moose. But, then again, so will the 9.3'sx57 and 62 and 72! Or the .375 or the ,.375 express or the 577/450 or the .577 snider or the 11.15x60R or the 9.5x56R or the.......!
Oh well, another good choice.
Photos and more to follow!!
