prices and calibers!
      #31143 - 15/05/05 12:36 AM

Being an absolut novice about doublerifles I find them facinating. I have read many books about them, I have yet
no practical knowledge and experience!.
I saw a Jeffery bl ejc in .577 nitro for some 30k. The gun was a plaine jane gun with no engraving or fancy wood!
Now....is it the caliber(the bigger the better) that makes the gun more attractive? I have seen a similar gun(same make) but in 450/400 but with fine english scroll fancy wood cased for only 18k and heck of a lot more attractive gun than the .577! I am much aware that condition, finish and name also have an influence and value!

rigbymauser,

I think you covered everything in your post. I just depends on which order you put them in.

Re the Jeffrey, it is probably the calibre that makes it more valuable.

Factors affecting value are (in NO particular order):
name
condition,
finish
amount of engraving or lack of
wood - fancy or otherwise
caliber
Sidelock/Boxlock
Hammer / Hammerless
Ejector/Extractor
Type of wood
cased / uncased
attractiveness of gun
Balance, Fell, Fit
Bore condition
Barrel Length
Originality
+ probably a whole lot more.

It is hard to put into words what affects value more - all or some of the above
factor into the equation at some point. You also get particular
markets (ie The US) that have particular bents (Good Wood, Engraving,
NAMES and condition !!!)

Hope this helps

500Nitro

Don't forget marketing hype. That can add thousands of dollars to a doubles value. Sometimes covered by your "ingredient" - "name".

Personally if I could get the same double as a user with equally good characteristics for thousands of dollars less, it is what I would go for. The "advertising" of brand names has never done much for me.

NitroX,

That's a very good point you make - and it doesn't just apply to doubles.

With the odd exception, that is why I generally buy or have bought "using doubles"
as opposed to pristine "named" guns" which in my opinion make it harder to"use" them
in our environments without it shoing.

(By named I mean H&H etc).

Thank you all for the replies!

As speaking of "name" guns which often command a premium price, it`s still visuel inspection of the gun that for me determing whether to buy or let go! Having no experience in doublerifles I would like to aquire one I must rely on
on of what I have read! The doublerifle I am looking for is not a high price "namegun" but a gun that is in good shape mekanicalwise, good bore in both barrels, tight action and the wood must have no repaires or cracks!.
I read an artical(swedish) once about an Army & Navy .500 Bl ejt that the gunwriter had found for 15K (US$) and that gun have been on my mind ever since and that`s is what I am looking for! I have a .416 Rigby allready so the doublerifle should fill the gab that the .416 Rigby doesn`t and I figured a.500 3" nitro would do nicely. My wife have approved my budget(hahaha)so next year I`ll go looking for a good doublerifle!
