the various 400/360s

I know the variance of bullet diameters and weights and general velocities. I know the 400/360 No2 is the .400 Jeffery necked down.

My question is in regards to the Westley, Purdey, Evans, Fraser and what ever other versions exist. Are they based on the .400 Purdey necked down or another parent case? Novel case?

The various 2.75” 360s as well as the 400/350 Rigby have a base diameter of .470” and the 400 Purdey has a base of .369” so I guess the 360s could be made from 400 brass. The 400 being 3” cannot be made from the 360s of course.
The 400/350 was introduced in 1899 and the 360 in 1900 and the 400 in about 1905.

Cartridges of the World says they were based on the 400 Purdey but I don’t see how that is possible chronologically.

Sometimes the British trade and its culture are maddening. Why weren't they more american and base everything off 3 or 4 cases like us??

I’ve only heard of it being called 360 No.2
Of course, it IS based on a 400 case, the 450-400 3” which has no relation to the other 400/360s. Why it was called the No.2 I’ve no idea except that it was a new 360 based on a larger case much the way the 500 No.2 was based off of the 577 case.
On the other hand, the 400-350 No.2 was simply a different loading of the very same 400-350 Rigby case.
It does get messy, the way these cartridges were named!

The British “trade” back in the day was very proprietary, so each maker often did something different. I guess not just to be “different” but to lock the customer in to buying the proprietary ammo for his rifle. Interesting, but does sometimes make it a challenge to source brass and dies once you suss out just what the rifle is really chambered for.
It comes to mind that the Lang designed .470 NE was a kind of exception as it was released to the trade so anyone could chamber for it.

And the .318, 404, 375 were released sooner rather than later and so they became a little more common than the ones remaining proprietary. There wouldn't be a 7mmRem if the 275H/H used a .284 bullet

@huvius, I say the 400/360 No2 as it distinguishes it using the 400Jeffery case rather than one of the others. Also allows a little better performance and easier sourcing of brass so I could actually use it.
