375f or 400jeffrey?

It looks like the 450/400 3" gets about 2100fps with a 400gr bullet for muzzle engery of around 3950psi.

The 375 flanged with a 300gr bullet is more like 2500 fps for energy of around 4150psi.

The 375f is definatly a flatter shooting round with more energy, but the 400 has a heavier bullet. Wich is more effective on dangerous game? Wich is more accurate (all else being equal)?

I'm still trying to decide on a caliber for a searcy PH. I think it's down to these two.

I'd bet you find 375F ballistics to be closer to 2400fps than 2500fps. JMO

Brass is going to cost about the same for either as will the dies...

I'd go with the 450/400. The 375 is well known for penetration, but the 450/400 does offer the heavier bullet, which would be an advantage.

i agree with new guy, I'd get the 450 and with 26 inch barrels, how sweet that would be

As the proud owner of a 450/400 3 inch I would reccomend that you get a rifle chambered in that rather than the 375 Flanged.

I feel it is a great all around chambering. Small enough to hunt warthogs with and big enough for dangerous game you come across. It has a long 400 grain bullet that penetrates well and the recoil won't jar your filling loose!

It will serve you well!

Go with the 450/400. I have a 450/400 3 1/4" and it is probably the best allround double rifle calibre for the modern man. With 400grain soft and solids it is plenty for the big African Game, and brown bears up close. With 300 grain Hawk bullets it is a great deer/pig gun for fun hunts.I too would recommend 26" bbls.

I'd go for a scoped .375 Flanged if I already had something bigger otherwise the .400 for me too.

I like the 375 Flanged but it depends on what you are going to use it for. The 375 should be quite a bit flatter and may be classified as a 300 yard rifle for Deer, Elk etc.

I do not know how flat the 400 with the 300 grain is but the 400 grain is, at best a 200 yard rifle.

If big animals are on your plate than the 400 is pretty hard to beat.

I like my combo of a 450/400 and a 9.3x74R.

Just a side note here. . .

You can order a NIB Searcy with 26" barrels in 450/400 3 inch or 450/400 3 1/4.

Thanks all. I guess it's the 450/400 3". I talked with Butch and he does not chamber the 3 1/4 version. I guess the 3" has won out.

You just made one of the most intelligent decisions of your life....The 450-400-3" is one of the finest calibers that I can imagine..I have owned a number of them, however I presently do not, and the anguish that I am going through is unbelievable, I must cure this malody, so I also have been talking to Butch about a small frame 450-400.

If penetration is a concern..... And the .375 is well know for penetration.....

I personally wouldn't have much concern on penetration with the .450/.400 either as it certainly isn't a slouch in this department; it would be my choice..
