I just saw this big gun on the 'net this afternoon at a dealer who doesn't normally have rifles. British Sporting Arms, Ltd.

25" Barrel

VG condition

14lbs. 2ozs., 14" LOP, cased - oak & leather, stalking safety.

If somebody wants a big stopper, this looks pretty good. A bit short, though.

This one has been for sale for close to two years. It is prooved for BP, can't remember the charge.

It would be odd indeed if only for black powder yet 14+ lbs.

Also, the gent who owns British Sporting Arms, Ltd. is well-versed in Brit guns. I can't imagine that he would palm off a BPE for a nitro.

I sure don't know, I'm not being argumentative, and it doesn't matter to me. All the info I have on that rifle is what you see posted here.

I haven't viewed it in person, however, I was told it was a full nitro gun in 2006 when I first saw it advertised. 14lbs is WAY too heavy for a BPE. I imagine the advertisement would have been updated by now if that were the case.

I called on the gun a year ago, yes it is a BPE, with a reproofing. Not that this is such a bad thing. Weight can always be added afterwards.

I called Charles today as it had been two years since I spoke with him about the gun. I remembered incorrectly in my prior post. It's not a bpe but rather prooved originally for 80-570 gr max. Essentially a light nitro, although I don't understand why it isn't stamped cordite. It was reprooved for the 14 ton 577 charge in 1984.

It's heavy enough for the full nitro load but I'm not a fan of reprooving a gun for a heavier charge that it was built for.

I'm sure the gun would have been gone long ago it was originally a full nitro.

I read in NE or somewhere else respectable that db rifles should have shorter length of pull than shotguns. If so, 14 inches might be OK for someone of average height (cf 13 5/8" commonly seen in bolt actions). The shorter pull would also put the balance point of such a heavy rifle closer to the shooter, making feel lighter.
