First double rifle... few questions...
      #12209 - 23/03/04 07:01 AM

well, dad's got it, bad. I made him watch "In the Blood" and now he wants a big-bore double something fierce! (not to mention a buff-hunt)...

basically two questions, which chambering and which rifle for a first-timer.

I just don't know enough about the flanged cartridges to be of much assistance, and outside of my SKB o/u scatter-guns, I'm useless on the double mechanics.

obviously, it will be a used piece.

and this will be anything BUT a safe-queen...

and I should add... that if anyone has something for sale, I'd gladly consider it.

That Gibbs 450 3 1/4 looks like a good buy in a useful caliber.

?????? #9 is a Chapuis,470NE and #17 is a Gibbs 450NE! If I had the $9800, the Gibbs would be in my safe, as we speak!

The Francotte is for the serious collector, or someone with more money than sense!

dasMafia

Here is another one from Guns America.

Model Name: William Douglas and Sons .470
Price : $7,995.00
Seller : JCBVANB
Contact : http://www.gunsamerica.com/gogetgun.cgi?gun_number=976447958
Description:
No better bargain will be found on this fine rifle, a William Douglas and Sons .470 Nitro, serial #1116.This rifle was purchased new from Cape Outfitters in June of 1997. Regulated for Federal ammunition, it is an extremely robust rifle using the time tested Anson & Deeley boxlock action with Purdey third bite. It has auto ejectors, hand checkering, and features a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. The rifle is in excellent condition, with 95% blue, 100% color case hardening. The action is tight, with a total of 71 rounds fired through the rifle, 35 on the left barrel and 36 on the right. Each shot was recorded in a journal, a copy of which is included.
Click this link to contact seller:

Like the Gibbs it will have Chopper Lump Barrels. Some will argue that the extra strength they supply is not needed but like Leather Interiors they show a little extra interest and attention to detail by the maker.

A new Searcy PH model in 450-400, 500-416 or 470 for $9500 and its a new gun and will take much higher pressure than a British gun..I sure like mine, and so has everyone thats looked at it...

For a strictly hunting rifle I prefer it to the British guns by far, and I can toss it in a guncase and take it anywhere and if it gets ruined or lost, I can replace it with another...

Not to say I don't love the old British guns, I do and have owned more than a few of them, I now own a few of them, but I don't consider the two in competition with each other....

I like the right tool for the job and I consider a new Searcy a better hunting rifle than any 100 year old gun, especially if you have not dealt in British guns a lot, most of them are junk, have been re-blacked a dozen or so times, all matter of 100 year old wear etc, as a matter of fact one really has to know his stuff when buying them, and even then one can get burned badly....

wow, that is VERY affordable... and the guns aren't exactly ungly as I recall either!!!

and the 450-400 might be the ticket from a "pain" standpoint... thanks!!!
