WOMAN'S Double--??What Caliber/Make?
      #54759 - 14/04/06 06:04 AM

I was thinking that a medium bore Double with a scope and shortened stock would be fun for the wife and young adolescents. They wouldn't have to work a bolt or deal with a single shot. I could consider lengthening the stock later if need be.

Anyone make such a rifle?

What caliber would be good for medium sized game up to 500 pound class? 6.5, 7 x 57R, ???

What gun makers would carry such a rifle?

What weight should the rifle weigh?

Any suggestions?

7x57R in about 7 pound gun. I think would be perfect. I beleive that quite a few makers off this caliber.

How about a 303 double to suit the 215gn round nose load?

Yeah, the 7 mill rimmed cartridges are good killers, are mild to shoot and the guns can be built light for easy carrying.
Most of the current double rifle makers offer guns in 7 mm.

Yeah, and here's how cool a 7mm looks on the business end:

Chapuis offers their doubles in 7x65R and 30-06.
My 9,3x74R sure shoots and handles nice.

Osa Johnson (5'2") used a .470 by Thomas Bland.

...and Astrid Bergman Sucksdorf used a Holland sidelock .475, but wrote:

it had a terrific kick and my whole shoulder was always black and blue after using it."

That didn't stop her from killing a number of leopards and tigers with it, though!

Depends on the woman I think.

A nice 9.3mm or .375 Flanged sounds ideal as a heavier chambering if bigger bores are too heavy recoiling.

I have handled Gerri Stallman's hammer 577-500 Rigby with which she has shot Cape Buffalo, eland and other game in Africa. My friend Ka'imiloa's wife Kehau also hunts with his Calderwood 500 BP hammer double. Kehau is one of the active volunteers at Women Hunters and do check out their website. They are a very friendly group of women and they have been particularly helpful to my wife with advice and encouragement.

Best wishes,
