What are the differences between the 3" and the 3 1/4" 500NE. How difficult is it to get either cartridge? Any experiences with the two cartridges would be very helpful. How much worse is the recoil with the extra 1/4"? Searcy on their sidelock offers the choice of both 500NE cartridges.

Always go 3" if making a new gun.

Brass is hard to come by for 3 1/4"
(unless you use my 200 cases !!!)

Perfromance is FA Difference
and not worth worrying about.

You or the animal wouldn't know
the difference apart from having
a bigger dick in your belt !!!

Is there really no performance gain with the longer cartridge? I most likely will not be reloading, does this change your recommendation?

Bulldog563

Kynoch lists very similar loads for the 3" and 3.25", but, list a lower pressure for the 3.25".

In fact they list their 3" at 25fps faster than their 3.25".

Technically the case would probably hold 12 or so more grains of powder, so, maybe you could get an extra 100fps.

But, note what Kynoch chose to do.

They chose to get the same performance except do it easier.

If you are buying ammo choose the most readily available.

Not many 3 1/4" NE were built.

Ammo is more readily available for 3"
especialy if you lost your ammo and had to
get some in a hurry, 3" is much more likely
to be available.

25fps - you get that is shot to shot variation anyway.

100fps - remember is yu are using it in a double rifle
it is going to shoot what it is regulated for.

Buffalo Arms in the US has 500NE 3.25 Bell cases. Can they just be trimmed to 3-inch, or am I missing a step?

Thymper,

No, you are not missing a step.

They can just be trimmed and resized and they are ready to go.

Sounds like the 3" 500 cartridge is the way to go.

What would be the preferred carry weight for a 500 nitro double?

Any real world advantages over a 470 nitro?

Any personal preferences?

Min 10lbs at the absiolute minimum, pref 11lbs - 12 lbs but make
sure it is well balanced - ie not barrel heavy.

Ye, a 500 Nitro hits with more authority than a 470 but if you shot
each animal in the correct place with either (but the same place for both,
they'd both die.

Once you go over .5", it does have an effect.

Preferred carry weight or preferred shooting weight?

I would say 10 pounds min, 11 pounmds max. A 12 pound gun is going to cut down on how far you walk.

The advantage of a .500 over a .470 is that the .500 is more likely to turn a charge if you miss the brain. If you hit the brain, then it does not matter which one you use.

Can you get 500NE barrels for a Merkel 140 on a 470NE gun?
Can the 500 use the same 470NE reciever?

Hoppdoc:

I'm going to say YES, just based on the untrained eye.

Last April, the DRSS had a hunt in Texas. I was there with my Merkel .500 3" and jjs was there with his Merkel .470 NE.

In doing a VISUAL side-by-side comparison, the two rifles looked identical - even the barrels were the same, with the exception that my .500 had less meat on the barrel walls becuase of the bigger bore.

AND, jjs' Merkle appeared to be heavier than my double. (jjs and NE450No2) will confirm this if they post because the both weighted them - that is, held the .500 in one hand and the .470 in the other at the same time.

So, with that, I THINK that Merkeld uses the same thing for both the .470 and .500, with just the boring different between the two.

Can anyone else comment on this?
