BUGBEAR VIRUS ????????
      #15199 - 26/05/04 12:52 AM

I got a virus from what looked like the E-mail address of a friend who is a guide in Alaska. It wasn't him it turns out,but because this guy always sends me pictures, I opened a file on this bogus E-mail...BINGO! Norton says it is a "BUGBEAR" virus!???????????????

Does anyone, here, know how I can rid myself of this virus? I have Norton Anti-virus, and it detected it but couldn't stop it, or fix the damage. The computer I'm typeing on now is an old one that I haven't used in years, and I scanned it for virus, and it doesn't show anything, so I guess the virus isn't tied to my account, but restricted to the computer it's self.

I am not sending any E-mails, so if anyone gets an E-mail that seems to be from me, don't open it, especially if it has an attatchment! I'm hopeing it hasn't attacthed it's self to my E-mail list, but I don't know that it hasn't!

Mac

I got a Bugbear virus a few months ago and lost everything on my Computer. Go and do a search for the virus on Google and you will find some free sites that will give you instructions and a program to get rid of it.

I found out that it lodged itself in my cookies and registry so I then got Spyhunter and erased all of the cookies and this ended it.

What a pain they are

I dont't think your PC has been damaged. Normally it the virus program detects the virus it is also able to prevent it from doing any harm. It either stops/removes it or isolates it so that it can be removed at a later stage.

www.trend.com has a free virus search. It should find it if it is still there.

I had a computer that was not hooked up to the internet for about 4 months. I plugged it in to the cable and immediately went to update my virus definitions in Norton Antivirus. In the little window of time I was exposed I got infected with something. Norton dectected it but couldn't do anything about it - from what I was told the virus knew enough to disable it. I searched the web for virus tools and found several that offer a free virus scan from their site, as an inducement to buy their product. I used two of them (one I remember was penicillin) and deleted everything they identified. Then I used some registry cleaners (one of them was Ace Utilities, trial version) and I deleted whatever they recommended. Then I would go back to the internet virus scans, Norton's registry cleaner, some other programs such as AdAware and HijackThis, all the while booting over and over. Finally after two days I was free of the virus and its effects (it was a trojan and was designed to force frequent random reboots). But I did avoid having to reinstall operating system and software.

Our ISP has a filter and scan on our mail that so far
has kept viruses out. Knock on wood... Ed.

There seems to be two versions of this virus. Bugbear A and B. Here is a link for removal of these viruses:

http://www.norman.com/index_search_html/en-us

Press the ">>mer" and the virus should be removed.

You may also want to install ad-aware which is also useful.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html

I hope this may help you!
