4140 @ RC28-30 is normal.

By "Platform lump" do you mean a monoblock?

Thanks, thought it would get to hard after welding.
By plattform stile i mean the one that you weld round barrels on and the short rib peace uppon.

Sounds like you're referring to a 'shoe lump'

Shoe lumps are typically silver soldered to the undersides of the chamber ends of the barrels.
Careful selection of silver solder alloy and careful torch work should keep you and your materials safe from harm.

450-366,
My advice would be to contact a reputable gunmaker regarding that question.
Maybe an email to Butch Searcy might get an answer.
Butch has in the past built quite a few shotgun to double rifle conversions as well as the many guns he now builds from scratch.
I would think he would have a pretty good idea on which steel type would be best suited for your job.
Whether he can find the time to reply might be another thing though.
Best of luck with your project.

Yes, thats the one I mean. But thought of using hi strength brass solder (900oC. By the looking at rifles and when they are building them it doesent look as silver alloy solder, but i could be wrong.

Thanks, but gunsmits are like magicians, they hold hard on their knowledge. I will probably do much faster by the trial and error way. And learn more by it.

Years ago and for quite some time, I built and serviced bicycle and mototcycle frames.
I've assembled countless ultra-high liability silver brazed joints.
The head tube on my custom ducati superbike based street bike is held in a silver brazed lugged joint.
It's held fine for nearly ten years of hard use, no problems. I've seen chromoly tubes literally torn in two (automobile vs bike), where elsewhere in the framework the silver brazed joints held together.

The brazing alloy you've seen may have been a bronze alloy. I just encourage you to look up the engineering specs for the steels and the brazing alloys you're considering. Look at the joint fit tolerances, look at the remperature ranges, look at the listed strengths, make sure your joints are properly prepared and cleaned, use the right flux for the job, use temperature indicator markers when working with engineered materials -- there are some amazing modern engineered silver solder alloys to work with. It's important to do your homework.

If you find out what alloy Searcy or JJ at Champlin uses for a shoe lump setup let me know. I'd really appreciate it.

Yepp,thats the one.

Looking at the picture in the link it seems as by the "burn" marks of the wire that the heated the lump/barrels way over the temp of silver solder.

Im been sketching a lump with the right (minor fitting) dimensions right on, perhaps I should think it over after seeing the marks.
