Stock work in California?
      #37276 - 12/09/05 04:12 PM

Anyone know of a decent stock service outfit in California?
Who would you send an old double to for bedding and tuning?

tinker

What do you mean by "bedding and tuning" ?

Either the stock is fine or it need fixing - ie it's cracked etc
and it's a case of fix it or replace it.

Look forward to your answer.

There are three guns I'm looking to deal with.

One's the Tolley, it'd had it's wood replaced quite some time ago and the wood/metal fit is not good. I've bedded the head of the stock where the action joins it, The rifle would seem to benefit from more bedding where the screws pass through the wood, under the top action tang, and under the trigger plate. The locks could likely use some similar attention.
Of the three the Tolley needs the most attention.

The other two are my 16b double rifles. They're both in the 145 year old neighborhood and have seen some slight wood shrinkage up at the stock's head and would also likely benefit from a good bedding there as well. The Mahillon has a scalloped action, I think a professional would probabally do a nicer job on that one than I would. The shorter barreled bore rifle also needs a stock bend, it's showing a slight cast on, it'd likely fit better with a slight cast off - hence the 'stock tuning' request.

I like the Tolley for all it's character with the essentially ugly-assed wood it's in, from what it seems the replacement may well have been done 'in country' on a safari. The bore rifles both have nice wood, I'd feel much better working with them if there were better wood/metal contact.
I don't want to kick out the $3500+ on any of the three for new wood.

Hope that makes sense.

tinker,

Makes perfect sense.

I'll ask my mate in San F where he gets his guns done.

I don't think it is in California - I think he sends them off
to a person interstate but he wouldn' send them to just anyone
as he has good + old guns.

Will try to find out and get back to you.

I seriously doubt that there's anyone qualified to do DR stocks in Ca. I suggest you call Butch Searcy and ask if he knows of somebody who does stocks. You'll most likely have to send it out of state.

500N-

Thanks.
I'll look back in here in the next few days to see what you come up with.
I'm not totally against sending a gun out of state. I was on the horn with Champlin Arms today seeing about turn around time with JJ.
I may well send him the Mahillon to fiddle with, he might actually get a kick outta that old beauty. It is such a honey...

NitroX-

I've left a few messages with the noted Butch over the last few months, never heard a peep in response. I'd given up on that lead up to today when I was given what might work out as the 'secret handshake' needed to get a response from his shop. Might go that route, might not.
I figure he's busy filling new orders and doesn't have the time to talk to someone asking for anything less than a new gun. I'd been leering at his snap action guns for some time too. Lots of good guns out there though.
First get the ones I have sorted, some time in the future there may be a new rifle built for me.

May just have to do it myself

I too have been sensing that there may not be anyone here in the state with the qualifications necessary who's also willing to do work on existing guns.
I was on my way up the coast the other day and stopped through Paso Robles with the intent to visit the Rigby effort but found pleasant distractions and passed on a walk-up ring at thier doorbell.
There may be a contact through thier shop though and come to think of it I think I'll drop a line down there to feel that possibility out.

Tinker,

Got a reply back. See your PM.

Tinker, - Can you update your profile so I know where you are
in the US - it would help with these type of questions.

Call Pete Mazur in Grass Valley, CA. He is very well known for restoration and repair of double rifles. He has resored several for me and does a perfect job. His number is 530-268-2412
