SXS for hunting pigs, birds
      #10084 - 25/02/04 11:08 AM

I havent had much to do with shotguns ,but will be after a side by side , mainly for hunting pigs and ducks ,but maybe some informal clay shooting later. I was after one with barrels about 30" long, double triggers and able to take high presure 3" shells. What recomendations are there for a decent one without spending huge bucks.

...i think the beretta 471 silver hawks (around usd2,800) are one of the best deals around...one of their euro models features shorten rifled slug barrels for hogs, etc...

I have a Simson Suhl S/S in 12 g with 30" barrels.

I find the barrels too long and get in the way sometimes. I think you may find this is the case especially for pigs in thick country.

This shotgun has 2 3/4 chambers so can't comment on 3" ones.

I was wanting to spend less than US$1000 for my first one. Second hand would be OK. Later on I intend to get a realy good one ,an old English double hopefully. Do any of the reasonably priced SXS doubles have the modern back bored barrels etc with removable chokes?

I was initialy thinking of shorter barrels for pigs in the bush ,but I have read and heard from others more knowlegable than myself that 30" barrels are better for wing shooting and clays. I will just have to get by with the xtra length or maybe down to 28"

Miroku made a very good basic SXS with no frills back in the 60's and early 70's that they exported to the US. I don't know whether they got your way, but if you find one it should be at a good price. It will be in 2 3/4" chamber, but they open out to 3" with no problem.

I owned one for many years...bought new about 1967...and rechambered to 3" about 1969. I gave it to a lifelong buddy who still uses it as his only shotgun, and he hunts the hell out of the gun...never a problem!

30" is great for pass shooting. The longer sighting plane helps a lot.

Personally I just find I bang it around a little as the barrels are longer than what I am used to.

I like my barrels to be around 26 to 28" so its not a lot of difference.

I'm trying to think of a nice side-by-side in your price range but it has been a while since I bought one, twenty years in fact. Bought two in the same week back then, the Simson and then a Spanish Azhur.

The Merkels are nice, not sure of the price though.

I HAVE been looking at second hand lighter weight side by sides with 2 1/2" inch chambers and started to get tempted. They WERE nicely priced when I started looking but not recently. I would like a nice light weight gun with open chokes for quail and similar shooting.
