Matching 20g barrels for ordered double rifle
      #94070 - 11/01/08 10:47 PM

What are your thoughts on the idea of getting shotgun barrels made at the same time my double rifle is being made? The idea of a matched set is appealing; the rifle on order is a Merkel 140, and Merkel offer the option of 20 gauge matched barrels if made at the same time as the rifle barrels (9.3x74R).

I already have a 12 gauge SxS shotgun (not Merkel - I'm not rich!), so 20 gauge would be a nice addition. What chokes to you recommend, for general use, mainly clay target, but a bit of field work, as well?

PS my shotgun skills are at the novice level.

I have 20 gauge 3" barrels to match my Krieghoff O/U .458, and they got a lot of use in Africa. Were I to order a set today, I think I would want choke tubes installed to get maximum use out of them.

I assume your DR is to have double triggers. If so, and you are not used to using them, the shotgun barrels provide a perfect tool for inexpensive practice, both on clays and in the hunting field.

Thanks xausa. Merkel offer as an option Briley choke tubes for A$786. Seems expensive. Do these tubes stick out the end of the barrels? If so, they could spoil the lines of the firearm, look ugly. Comments?

I have Briley tubes in two of my shotguns, a Browning Double Automatic and a Winchester Model 12. You cannot see the tubes unless you look directly into the barrel. A$786 sounds pretty pricy, especially since Briley installs them in a double barrelled gun here for US$399, including five choke tubes.

I have just e-mailed Briley to find out if they have an authorized representative in OZ who can perform the work for you there and will let you know what the response is.

I had a Francotte 9.3x74r with a set of 20 bore shotgun barrels added by the previous owner. I found that the gun never handled well with the shotgun barrels. The pistol grip stock with grip cap and long tang, tang over the strap of the stock, slightly bolstered action, all caused to much weight at the rear.

Make certain if you do this, the gun is weighted properly for both applications. Perhaps 3" chambered 29" shotgun barrels with a solid smooth rib.

My Chapuis 9.3mm came with a set of 20gauge magnum, with interchangeble chokes. It fits the gun beautifully and make it the best combination gun. It can shoot from varmints to elephant, from doves to pheasants perfectly. It is the ultimate versatile gun.

Briley gave me the following address in OZ and said that the price should be the same as theirs (US$399.00):

Mialls/Briley Australia
(Briley Thinwall, Full services and parts)
59 Playne St Frankston, Victoria, Australia, 3199
Technical (03) 97831576
Orders (03) 97811668
Fax:(03) 97837887

I assume they can tell you what choke barrels to order to simplify the installation.

Personally, I think a set of 20g barrels can make a good partner to the rifle barrels, but agree with Sinner that both barrel sets must be set up to balance and handle correctly.
I sometimes hunt on an outback property where the game includes very good sized mountain boars, big billy goats, deer, rabbits and foxes.
I take along a 400-350NE double which also has a set of 20g barrels, and that set up can adequately handle anything on that list.
The gun handles very nicely with either barrel set.
When hunting rabbits and carrying the gun with the shottie barrels fitted, I always keep a few rounds of buckshot and a couple of slugs in my pocket in case I run onto something bigger than bunnies.

Xausa. Thanks for your help. I contacted Miall's Gunstore re Briley chokes. They have told me that they can supply and fit chokes for $600, a 25% saving on the Merkel price.
The deed has been done, and the matching barrels have been ordered. Production is scheduled for 3rd quarter of this year.

I'm attaching the correspondence I had with Briley. They are reproduced with the most recent messages printed first, so you should read from bottom to top.

The operative phrases are: "Have you tried Mialls? Please let me know what they are charging. It should be the same as us. If not I will try to get you sorted out at fair price."

You should contact this person directly and take him up on his offer to intercede.

"Wow, $700 for threading! That is insane! Our even coem with five chokes. Have you tried Mialls? Please let me know what they are charging. It should be the same as us.

You advertise fitting and furnishing a set of choke tubes for a double barrelled gun for $399.00 at your location. Is there anyone in Australia whom you authorize to furnish and install your tubes at a comparable price?

If they are threaded we can supply chokes to you. Sometimes people ask for us to overide the actual threads as well.

No idea, but since the barrels have not even been ordered yet, I am sure they could be ordered Full and Full to simplify fitting.

Hi Bill,

Do you know the Briley Series number or thin wall choke measurements for the shotgun's barrels?

Do you have a representative in Australia who can sell/install Briley thin wall tubes? A friend in Australia is ordering a Merkel S/S double rifle with interchangeable 20 gauge shotgun barrels he would like to fit with tubes, but the Merkel dealer there wants A$786 to furnish the barrels with Briley tubes.

Thanks,

Bill Warren

700.00 for threading is OK as long as that currency is about 6:1 to the US dollar.

Interesting reading, Xausa. Just to be clear, the price asked for the Briley choke tubes is from the Merkel factory($786). The Australian importer, Granite Arms, is merely passing on the price(in fact, this is a discounted price!). Garnet, of Granite Arms, has been wonderfully helpful, as has the dealer I'm going through, Pine River Lock and Gun. I would recommend these to anyone.
The Miall's price includes the threading and the tubes.

The US$399.00 also includes the threading and the tubes. I would take Stephen up on his offer to try to bring the price in line with the one Briley charges in the US.
