Hey guys, have any of you guys tried this ammo? It's factory rated at 2200fps! Any real world chrony results?

I've shot some when they first came out with them. The chrono'd velocity was close to advertised. The only problem was that I had very hard bolt lift when trying to eject the brass. I also noticed that there was definite brass flattening of the bottom of the brass. I believe that they're loaded a wee bit hot. There's only so much you can do with brass that doesn't have the internal capacity.

I figured as much, ther's certainly no free lunch with the 458 WM.

Dude, I thought you had a 458 Lott. If that's the case, shooting it with the 458 WM stuff shouldn't be much of problem. Just clean it VERY thoroughly afterwards. I've always had a 458 WM around after beating myself up with 45/70 GORILLA loads out of my old Marlin a long time ago. Compared to the 45/70, the 458 WM was a just a push.

I've got both a Lott and a WM it's a late 80's model 70 push feed. Just came across this ammo while on the neverending search for Lott brass, just wondered how much bluesky was in that 2200 fps.

Phil Shoemaker said he tested the Hornady HM .458 Win Mag ammo over his chrono in a side-by-side test with factory .458 Lott Hornady ammo in the same Lott rifle.

Hornady "Heavy Magnum" .458 Win Mag 500gr RN = 2220 fps

Factory Hornady .458 Lott = 2260fps

Fired in the same rifle in a side by side test...

How does the price of these super duper hornady 458 mags compare with other factory 458 ammo?

From what I've seen they are about on par with other Premium 458 WM's, they are going for the mid 40's on Gunbroker and about 10-15 higher through most of the distributors. Keep in mind these are US prices I'm not sure about Australia?

I'd love to try some out.
Any idea what powder they use?

...probably the Hodgdon equivalent of good ol' Mulwex!!

Those ballistics are not too difficult to achieve with ADI powders in the .458: just ask Matt Graham!

Alan,
You will find a run down on the loading process for the "magnum" rounds on accuratereloading.com-they use a special extra dense powder and a 3 stage case charging process-with components unavailable to hand loaders.
By the way,the searcy is finished but still have not got my hands on it-paperwork USA side ++++(read fuck-up).

Once again the 458 raises its ugly head, its simply a poorly designed round, that everyone is trying to make right...Maybe some day they will if the right powder comes along...
