458 Lott with 16.5 inch barrel
      #35064 - 25/07/05 11:36 PM

What kind of velocity do you guys think I would get from a 458 Lott with a 16.5 inch barrel? Assume that with a 24 inch barrel shooting 84.0 grains of IMR4320 behind a 500 grain Woodleigh I get 2300 fps.

This would be a brush gun, if I build it.

According to Remingtons Ballistics Info you would lose 10fps for every inch under 24 for a round in the 2000-2500fps range so according to them you wound lose 75 fps which is insignificent really. However the muzzle blast would be pretty good. I have an 03 Spfld that has had the stock and barrel cut to 16", the bolt handle modified and the neatest Winchester style safety with G&H side mount and Lyman Alaskan scope. Nice custom front sight blade. Built by Les Womack for a gunwriter for trail use in Alaska. Both my 375 and 416 Rigby Brno's have barrels cut to 21". Very handy in Zim in the jess and no drawback in the open. I never even hear the gun go off when I shoot. I really don't like guns with Bbls ove 22" but that is personal.

500,

You might be able to get a fairly accurate answer on that from those single shot pistol forums. I think there is an active one on AR. A lot of these blokes have rifle calibres chambered in those things and I think they might have barrels in the 15 to 16 inch range. I think 375 Win Big Bore and 444 Marlin are common chamberings so velocity with those in the pistols would probably relate quite well to the 458 Lott as "rifle" velocities are similar with all three.

Mike

My guess would be 2150 to 2200 fps out of the 16 1/2" barrel, and if the velocity is lower than that, changing to another powder should bring the velocity back up.

The suggestion about asking some oddball handgunners is good though, I have seen custom built bolt action pistols in .375 H&H and .458 Winchester, and have no doubt that some masochist has built one in .458 Lott.

Richard.

Considering your using a very fast powder and also the ONLY powder for the 458 Lott IMO, I doubt that you will lose much velocity...I would venture to guess that you will get 2200 or better..I think IMR-4320 will burn completely in 16 inches...but only a chronograph is going to answer your question as I have seen as much as 100 FPS deviation between two barrels of the same caliber and all things equel...
