A Matched Pair

My .416 Rigby arrived yesterday, and I am very pleased with the way it turned out. Now I have a somewhat "matched pair". These rifles were built by Ryan Breeding. The one on top is a .505 Gibbs that I've had for a few years. The one one the bottom is the new one, the .416 Rigby. Both of these rifles have 24" barrels and a 14.5" LOP. The Gibbs weighs 13.5 lbs. with the scope attached, and the Rigby weighs 11 lbs. 13 oz. Here are the photos:

Nice pair Chip.That 505 makes the 416 look like a 22.

I have always liked Ryan's rifles. Very nice work and finish on these vicious brutes he builds.

Ryan Breeding has a few "trademarks" on his rifles. Among them are the grey gunkote finish on the metal parts, as well as the blackened checkering. You can direct him to use black gunkote, or just plain old rust bluing, if you choose. I opted for the guns to be finished as he prefers: grey. The finish has grown on me over the years.....if I ever order a third one, it will also have the grey finish. Cheers. Chip.

Igo, You have to excuse the American taste in metal finish. That finish process saves a lot of time preparing the metal. This is a beautiful pair and a very well though out set of calibers. A 416 and 505 compliment each other so very well. IMHO.

Wonderful, wonderful set of guns.

A wonder what would make a good 3rd? 375 or 300 H&H maybe? Or a little 7x57? I wish I had that decision.

Chip,

Have you hunted a lot with the 505 Gibbs since you received it? Rifles appears to be in very good condition. I tinkered with the idea of a 500 but 505 is simply too much recoil for me.

I understand this metal finish with McMillan fiberglass stock but not with high grade walnut one. In the other words, workhorse with silver shoes do not look like real one.

Igo,

I agree with you about 50%, for my taste, I prefer high polish and blue regardless of the stock and if I wanted a weather proof gun then I would opt for satin finish stainless steel. But that is just me. I can put that aside and still appreciate these.

Yochanan: Good eyes. The Gibbs has been shot plenty, but has not been out on a hunt. The hunts that I have taken since receiving the .505 have been plains game hunts; thus inappropriate for the .505. My friends and I are kicking around the idea of an Asian Buffalo hunt in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2016. Perhaps the Gibbs will get it's chance then. We'll see. Chip.
