Any one own a cannon?
      #11371 - 11/03/04 06:49 AM

I have a 3/4 size 3" field gun, I have not shot in years.
I think I will fill some soda bottles with cement buy a few pounds of black powder and kill a few trees.

Any of you ever have a cannon?

I have a 6" BP Mortar built out of an Oxygen cylinder and a German WWII Mortar bipod! It shoots Bowling Pins potted in Epoxy about 1000 yrds! Hysterical thing to watch in action. I even have a video of it.-Rob

I built this one

Note the postion of the pulleys and lines

Here it is just at the end of full recoil. Now look at the lines.

I shoot a 1 inch cast lead slug that weight 7 oz. Left to right 1 inch slug, two 577/450 cases, 17 HMR case.

The two guns I currently have. I also have the tube for a beer can mortar in the shop and am acquiring the material to build a bowling ball mortar.

I just acquired a round ball mould, but haven't tried it yet.

So this is a single shot 4 Bore, on wheels?

Dude, talk about a BIG BORE! That's cool. Can you carry that thing in the thick bush or do you just plunk a lil ol chunk of lead?

DoubleD--
Great photos! I have tried several times to get
a photo of mine just as it went off but it never works.
Nice job of building your cannons. They look like a
lot of fun. How much powder for the bowling ball?

The bowling ball mortar uses 4 oz of blackpowder and the ball lands about 1/2 mile out in the bay and you can barely see the splash. I suggested the owner reduce his charge to one oz and shoot into the bay, just make sure he was shootng down wind and not up wind or he was going to get wet from the spray.

I shot my beer can mortar into a pond from 100 yards. Time of flight was 17 seconds. The projectile was a 12 oz beer can filled with cement. the impact geyser was 25 to 30 feet high and soaked everyone on the firing line. (down wind) The Geyser looked just like an explosion in any old 1950's black white WWII Naval war movie.
