With the onslaught of new "Standard" action DR cartridges some look very interesting on paper.

Let me begin by saying I like belted cases because they are headspaced on the belt which is very good for a DR rifle (another subject).

Therefor, the .400 H&H gets 9/10 in my judgement on several marks: belted, 40 Cal., long neck and low pressure. They only reason for not a 10/10 is its really long.

In the 40 caliber class, the .416 Ruger looks promising. Not perfect, but maybe 7/10.

My gripes are it's neck is too short and the shoulder is tiny. It's what the .416 Taylor should have been.

Regarding the .375 -

I can't praise my .376 Steyr enough, well though out and executed design. BUT, have you seen the .375 Blaser Magnum?

I like it, more neck would be better, but it aint too bad.

I have the best experience with the H&H cartridges line. I love the looong neck of the 400 H&H too.
Technically very well thought-out cartridge from W. Romey. My favourite DG round.

CZ-Hunter,

One of the axioms of cartridge designs was the neck should be one caliber in length - but - in recent times there has been the rise of long-for-caliber projectiles in .375, .416 and .458 that elevate them.

Some members have praised the 350 (.375) and 450 (.416) bullets from Woodleigh. With those new high capacity cases, those bullets are ripe for use; if only you had enough neck to anchor it.

Oddly, the 400 H&H uses the .410 bullet instead of the vastly more popular .416 which is likely its downfall.

Hello Bonanza,

I noticed the increased use of heavy for caliber bullets but in regard to the 400 H&H (.411 bullet!) the aim was different. I assume H&H wanted to have more powerful rifle caliber in their line as they had realized the 375 H&H is on the light side for DG.

Advantages of this cartridge according to my observations:
- 400 gr bullet is the logical choice for DG as it hits much harder than 300gr of .375.
- in regard to the design the long bullet does not rob powder space
- it is not overblown as the short/long ultra magnums or even 416 Rigby so you can built a trimmer rifle
- the recoil is more bearable in comparison to other .416 (more like 450/400 NE) so the target results should be better
- feeds smooth
- sexy in appearance and bearing the H&H name

The one negative point is that it uses the .411 bullet which can be obtained by Woodleigh or NorthFork only. But for me this is not an issue...

I believe if someone needs a rifle that is used occasionally for African DG or large game or for pounding bears or moose this is the rifle he should choose.

There is a religion regarding "Belted vs non-Belted". I can not say entirely that I havenīt spoked against belted cartridges at one time..however I have a nice .300 H&H M98 and a Ritterbusch .378WEA + a custom pre-64 rifle in .270Wea. They all Work to perfection!!. My.416Rigby(former), 333Jeffery, 8x57 Work perfectly well too.. All my rifles are controlfeeded.
If I didnīt have my Ritterbusch in .378WEa I wouldnīt have sold my .416Rigby to begin with. Should I Again have a .400bore bolt-repeter the .400 H&H would become a strong candidate.
