I would get the old classic 450 NE (450, 3,25) Lots of bullets to chose from and case is small enough to avoid fillers with many modern powders.

are the 500 ne and the 3" the same? was looking at 450ne bottleneck and the 450 3.25 since hornady makes everything and have a 458. barrel but the 500 looks interesting it's at 45-90 now so 450 would not be a bad jump.

I think I'd like a .500 NE that shot well with Sharp's - type cast bullet loads (BP & equivalent).
A .577 2 1/2" or is it 2 3/4" BPE would also turn my crank.

The ones I have tend to be the hardest bloody things to get and the most expensive brass ....

I do not own thes but fit your criteria:

Firstly the .400 3" even if it is outside your range.

Then the .470, not my favourite, too run of the mill, but fits your criteria.

The .450 NE, yep. Like it better than the .470 and more versatile, but lesser availability.

The .450 No2 NE that I have has very expensive brass.

I have an old brit double with two barrel sets, .475 3 1/4 (Straight) and .280 Flanged NE..

Two odd ducks...oddball .483 bullets etc..Woodleigh make them.....and Huntington has .280 brass and I have dies for both..

Kynoch makes .475 NE ammo and eureka...it regulates as well..and with handloads..

Will load for the .280..

From a novice`s point of view...who absolutely do not have any knowledge about double rifles...but read up a lot to improve my poor knowledge about classic doubles ...

The .500/465 Nitro Express introduced around 1907 is yet another large rimmed, necked round from Holland & Holland for use in their single shot and double rifles.

Like John pointed out:
The .450 No.2 Nitro Express was introduced by Eley in 1903 and was designed for use in both single shot and double rifles.

Based on the old black powder 500/450, the .500/450 Magnum Nitro Express was introduced by Holland & Holland for their single shot and double rifles during the late 1890s

The .475 No.2 is another large cartridge of the early 1900's and was available in two different loadings
.475 No.2 Eley

As mentioned before...info from webpages.( Kynoch web page)..but I really would like to build of buy these doubles when good fortune smiles on me some day...

Yes I to think 450NE is the way to go, lots of bullets & will do it all in a light slim rifle !

We will have a few 405Win Lee Speeds soon, I was one of the first to start on one & talked to others about a .40 in a Speeder, but looks like mine will be the last one done !

the cool part about the 450 is hornady makes everything to reload with. which is not the case with the 45-110 or 120. i think the 45-120 and the 450 are close.but the big difference is telling your buddy that its a 450 nitro express. i'm going to put express sights on too. i wish someone made repro lee speed sights.

The 500 Nitro Express 3" kept John Hunter alive. I suppose that it would do the same for me if I held up my end of the bargain.

Here's the spoiler - .458 Lott. I know, I know, not an NE, but hey it'll get the job done just as nicely and at a fraction of the cost!

if it were a mauser action or a ruger i'd think about the lott. but a turn of the century falling block needs an old cannon shell was going with the 45-90 but decided to go for the gusto.kill two birds with one stone. i get a nitro caliber, and a nice single shot. plus hope to go out west or up to maine in the next couple of years.in the meantime plan on wearing out some swamp hogs. the only worry might be it under weight. it's a 26"tapered octagon scales out at 3.5 lbs which may put me at about 8 or 9 lbs.

So you are building up a Winchester High Wall?
I am no expert on 1885s but I think there were some differences in action wall thickness on the high walls which may be a consideration when using an original action. (anybody know for sure?) The modern ones would be fine I would think.
I always wanted to replicate a Jeffery retailed highwall in 500 express but never got around to getting one done.

From the article Ripp linked above:

"His particular rifle will regulate flat nosed 480-grain solids at 2,200 fps and 500-grain Woodleighs at 2,150.  (The rifle has 26 inch barrels.) He has shot both these species with both these options and cannot really tell the difference but I think he would if the 480s were only doing 2,150 as the literature said they should."

Gun writers are so silly...
