New Caliber Needed? - Filling the Void
      #207587 - 23/04/12 05:27 PM

With nothing better to do than ponder, I started looking at the gaps between the different common calibers. I was surprised to find that the jump from .375 to .410 was the greatest. With so many calibers you would think that the medium bores would be sufficiently covered. If another caliber is in there then it must be pretty obscure. So, now comes the question. Do we need a medium bore rifle with a caliber between the .375 and .40 calibers? Perhaps a .390 caliber (9.9mm) is in order.

I don't believe we need any more calibres. We have all bases covered, and very well. I think we had about all the calibres we needed fifty or sixty years ago. But I don't have anything against the lads who get a kick out of tinkering and developing and wildcatting, it's just not for me.

I think on AR someone's got a .375 H&H necked up to .39# (# = can't remember exactly, I think maybe .395)

But agree with the post above.

What void? What animal do you intend to shoot that cannot be taken with a 375 on the low end and a 410 or 416 on the high end? I just don't see a void here.

There is. .577, .600, .700 and then the bore rifles. And then field artillery pieces and battleships, I guess.

Yea. There is also a 100 grain jump also. I there was a cartridge in between that shot a 350 grain projectile you could match the .375 and .410 and have decent SD.

350 @ 2300 fps = 3950
350 @ 2500 fps = 4800

The old .38-55 Ballard (later WIN), still in use, narrows the caliber gap a tad. Bore diameters commonly .379-.380. Most shooters use cast bullets so some variation is acceptable. And I believe the more obsolete .40-90 Sharps Straight was a .403 bore. Those two get us down to a gap of .023.

Interesting, Grenadier.
There was also a .405 diameter bullet used in the .400 Purdey and some other .400s, but these haven't stood the test of time in the same way that some of the others have. I suppose the 'gap' has partially been filled not by diameter but with the introduction of 350gr .375" bullets.
(also, think you missed the .318 in between the .311 and .323)

To late fellas. .395" has been a standard barrel order at Mcgowen's for a while now. I've got two barrels ready to build a double when and if I ever get caught up.
